Neat fact: some species of trees such as fir and birch can use their root and mycorrhizae systems to tell if a neighboring tree is lacking in certain nutrients (more common with trees grown from seeds of those around them). And after taking these “readings” they are able to send nutrients to the other tree’s root system to help it survive. This is why some trees that are considered “suppressed” or receive less sunlight than others are able to survive if their parent trees are close by. I learned this from my dendrology professor last year and definitely paraphrased a bit haha. Hope it still makes sense though!

-For anyone who wants to read the original scientific journal I learned this from. It is published by Suzanne Sinard. She has several other works that are also on some very interesting topics. Give some of her work a read sometime!

I am so happy to see so many people reacting with this comment. You guys are all awesome and I hope that you continue to spread the word about our freaking awesome world!

It would be like conducting a plant orchestra if you connected a whole patch of those together

I love how this has been something forever. Even regular trees will react miles and miles away from a tree that may have a certain experience. I believe this concept was utilized in the movie avatar quite brilliantly

Interesting fact: Mimosa is also a Spanish word that means Sensitive. So he's basically calling it "Sensitive Sensitive" in two languages 🕵

My mom had like 50 mimosas today and she isn’t getting up

When I was going to college I told my dad that mimosas were like something from Alice in Wonderland in real life and my favorite tree. He later drove country roads and found some seedlings to dig up and bring to me. He's been dead well over a decade and the tree grows strong. 💓

Imagine controlling a machine that’s hooked up to hundreds of plant stems, if the foliage was laid out in the right pattern and a sequence was loaded into the machine you could literally make the coolest visuals out of that. Imagine the potential for film!!

You technically control everything with your mind it’s just the actions are carried through the usage of our arms.

This is not really an action potential as the plants lack nerves. This is a demonstration of voltage gated ion channel proteins which are absolutely present in plants. Note that the voltage change is the only thing being measured which is why you can achieve the same feat with electricity

This guy is soon going to control everything with his mind

If you have enough plants, could you chain them all together into a circle causing a loop of constant movement? I'm assuming it also produces a potential when triggered.
