Rugby Referee Analysis: South Africa vs Ireland 2nd Test

What a series it has been between South Africa and Ireland. It's a realy pity that we won't get to see a third tech as this is such a great modern day rivalry. The Springboks vs Ireland seems to produce close games every time thet play each other. This was another classic where Ireland came out as the deserved victors of the game, but it's sad to see that we're still getting poor officiating and mainly from the TMO, who has been subpar these last couple of games. I cover some of the controversies of the game some of the main ones includes Caelan Doris' yellow card and his dangerous cleanout on Malcolm Marx, alongside James Ryan. This was controversial because we had James Ryan who charged into the ruck off his feet, and the ref and TMO seemed to ignore his foul play, all because Doris' foul play occured first. That should not matter and both players should've gotten carded.

Then we had the last drop goal of the game, to me it wasn't very controversial as Cheslin Kolbe was not blocked, Caelan Doris had all the right to stand his ground and give make Kolbe run around him. It was just a smart play by Doris and an even better drop goal by Ciaran Frawley.

Then we had the scrums, there's too much to talk about, it's better to just watch the video as I go over the scrums.

Again, we as fans just want consistency. And I do feel for the referees, as the laws are just too complex to referee and there seems to be a lack of good TMO's at the moment which also puts extra pressure on the referees to perform. It's frustrating to see the same mistakes week in and week out. We just want consistency, is it too much to ask for?

Croc roll is more dangerous than a high tackle and with a more immediate impact to gain parity/nullify up front imo. Frizell did the same deliberate move in the WCF. Red card + suspension.

"The knee reap is a banned judo submission. It’s when you put pressure on the opponents knee, pushing from outside the knee in towards the inside of the knee. It’s essentially a sideways dislocation of the knee, causing quite extensive ligament damage.

In bjj context this usually comes in to play with Ashi Garami. Basically if the foot comes over the hip (if you drew a line straight up from the center of their thigh) you’re starting to reap and it’s illegal in most comps. Of course there are other positions that would result in a reap too. But that’s kind of the standard reap position. The original submission is also an ashi garami position."

That knock on near the end of the game was ridiculous, 3 points to SA for nothing, and you're right about the whole game. There's something up with the refereeing lately and tmo it's not up to par.

Must say these vids are better than your first one's. They where very one sided. Nice to see that you compare the calls on both side. Kudo's.

Thank you man for all you great work. Lets be honest, the Ref and TMO did make alot of mistakes in this game but it kind of added to the drama of the match. The pace and the massive intinsity and physicality in the game, made it a superb watch. I really enjoyed this one

I think when we watch rugby, we always assume that our boys are sweet little angels who never set a foot wrong.

But to each and every supporter who watched the titanic game in Durban Saturday: no your boys were not sweet little angels. Yes, they absolutely were busy with some shithousery.

After the all the high tackle drama of the RWC23, it’s infuriating to see all these dangerous tackles again

You should start to provide your ratings. EG 7/10 for Ref. 4/10 for TMO. Would be a great add 👍

Thank you again for your effort in making these videos. They are certainly unbiased, with each video I am gaining a better understanding of the laws, which make for more enjoyable games. Your videos are deffo educational, I don't understand why some people get emotional by them. keep up the great work. will be back for future videos.

I think the ref got a bit lost as the hits were coming from all sides . The knock on by the South African they he gave a peno against Ireland was incredible, he was right there

The TMO was completely MIA in that match. We actually remarked at some point during the game that someone should should go do a health check visit and make sure he's still breathing.
What's being missed in that final charge-down attempt, is that the player blocking Kolbe shouldn't even have been on the field if the ref and TMO had done their jobs properly with that double croc roll and bunker decision.

Given the dramatic changes in players physical strength and speed, rugby will have to simplify its laws and make things easier for refs or simply go back to the bloody medieval game it originated from

Yet another great video by TAS. I rarely agree with every single outcome you present but that’s not the point. It’s great analysis and I like discussing your detailed views with my friend who is a rugby ref. The views and subscribers speak for themselves.

I watched Nigel Owens whistle watch. He basically said the Doris incident was down to referee interpretation. It was looked at by the TMO and the South African team can lodge a complaint if they feel justified. Rassie has not said anything and has said Ireland deserved to win. We (Ireland ) were probably a bit lucky with this decision but we had terrible luck with the Ref and TMO in the first test which could have affected the outcome of that game. Sorry for Marx, I hope he makes a quick recovery.

I'm happy with most calls being 'part of rugby' (bar the scrums) but that Croc roll was something else. Marx back in his third game and a DOUBLE croc roll which could be another year out or a career ending injury. It needs a higher sanction and review. How the refs continue to mess up scrums is baffling. I get we don't get many front rowers as refs, but this needs to be an essential part of refereeing courses

Many of the calls are at best borderline. If the ref blew his whistle for every infringement, the game would never flow. We've just got to accept that rugby is such a convoluted game with so many rules that it is almost impossible for a ref and his assistants including the TMO to watch everything in the game.

Just a point on the Doris yellow card, Etzebeth holds onto Joe McCarthy for 5-10 seconds, and illegally tackling a player off the ball preventing him clearing the ruck, without that the in iincident would not have happened. Ryan is about 8 yards away and would not be involved in the ruck, he is clearly incensed by this and comes in with force. If the ref had blown against Etzebeth, no yellow card would have taken place, Doris stays on and SA don't get the 9 penalty points.

One thing is for sure - Rugby is just whatever sells and gets people talking. Controlled by TV Rights. Not a gentlemen sport anymore. Replays on TV is something of the past. Someone is trying to control the discussions. Thank you for this channel. At least we can see the stuff again.

Great analysis.

However, on the last drop goal, the irish player moves to his left to block RG run after the ball is out. Somehow the officials missed this. Is this not obstruction?
