It's interesting how both Joker and Bruce both comment that the apartment is nice and has lots of space. It's a clever way to draw a parallel between two damaged, psychotic people who just happen to operate on different sides of morality.

When we again watched the film (as a young intellectual) we found this scene to be a good example of dialectic cinema: the shots of Kim Basinger are largely uninflected, with Keaton's performance forming the negation. All praise to Ms Basinger's acting.
