I wanted to thank you Ford Boss Me. Because of you helping me trouble shoot back then when i was in the need of help. And when i came across the video and tips on how to start your vehicle to avoid the cam phaser rattle. I was talking to one of the advisor from the ford dealership in my city. And i got a letter from FORD MOTOR COMPANY. My truck falls under the
Customer satisfaction program 21B10, 21N03, and 21N08. If it was not for you and me watching your videos by far BEST details and explaining it, I would of probably never figured that the cam phasers were bad. I remember when i took my truck in at 58, 000 before powertrain warranty finished and they told me "the noises you hear are totally normal the engine shows no codes. Its fine. I just wanted to thank you keep doing what your doing your a hero thank you 🙏🏼

Thanks for the latest update and cancellation of the last TSB which was confirmed by my local Ford dealership and shop foreman. On Aug 19/2019 I had the motor torn down due to the rattle which sounded like my old 5.9 Cummins on a sub zero morning start. Parts replaced on the build sheet included QTY 2 HL3Z*6256*C (SPROCKET CAMSHAFT), QTY 2 HL3Z*6C525*C (CAM), timing chain, among the other associated gaskets. seals, and bolts. Started to hear a slight cold soak knock again so will be calling and reporting this to the dealer. The mechanics aren't sure what the permanent fix will be so hopefully Ford will goodwill folks if this turns into an epidemic. For the record oil changes with full synthetic Pennzoil and Motorcraft filters every 5-6500 kilometers.

Man i appreciate, I absolutely hate this rattling noise on my 2018 Expedition. I went to the dealer/ service with this issue maybe a year ago and the technician said that it supposed to be like that 🤦🏻‍♂️🤣 now I know what to say, I’ll go back there definitely in the next few days. That would make me really happy if they can make this noise go away!

Thanks for this video. My truck was reprogrammed few weeks ago for his recall. Few days later still making noise and noticed Trans was shifting weird at times. Also noticed cooling fans coming on prematurely. Truck was at dealer today, they found nothing wrong with cooling system and Trans but they are replacing cam phasers under tsb 21-2119. Parts are on back order. So now we wait

I do HVAC by trade and I have 19yrs automotive history. I think what would help with gaining the oil pressure on start up to reduce phaser rattle is not priming the fuel line until the key is in the ignition or the push button has been started. I believe if they changed that programming to get that 3-5 seconds of additional cranking, it will stop that rattle a delay that repair. I have a phaser noise on the 18' f150 w/ 165k. As of right now, I just floor the gas for about 3-5 seconds and release the pedal and it starts. Or making HVAC clash with auto and wire in a delay of some kind on the fuel line to prevent the fuel from priming and you will achieve that delay start to prime the oil pressure.

Thank you! Mine is in the shop today for this.
I now know what questions to ask and what to look for.

Thank you for posting this, my truck is experiencing all kinds of problems after the TSB 20-2315, and my local dealership can't get my truck back on its feet.

Beginning of February I noticed a small amount of oil pooling on the left valve cover and brought it over to my local dealership on February 13th and I got the truck back on February 20th.

"Found TSB 20-2315 pertains to this concern. Replaced all four phasers, reprogrammed PCM and rechecked with no further concerns."

On the same day I noticed oil pooling on the same spot and contacted the dealership about it, they looked over the problem and told me it was only residual oil not cleaned by the tech. About a month later I noticed more oil pooling on the same spot, brought it to the dealership on March 20th and I got the truck back on March 30th.

"Replaced valve cover (part came with new gaskets and seals installed), and rechecked with no further concerns.".

On April 3rd, the truck was parked and running after a wash as I was drying it. When I got back into the truck the christmas lights were on (Power train Malfunction/Reduced Power), (Antilock Brake Fault), (Service Steering), (Pre-Collision Assist Not Available), (Park Aid Malfunction), (Restraints Indicator Lamp Warning) and many more, I also have no steering, no GPS, no 911 assistance, none of the buttons on the steering wheel work, no 4x4. Honestly too many to list.

I got my truck back after being at the dealership from April 5th to April 15th.

"39383 verified customers complaint scanned for codes vehicle had 87
codes cleared codes and and 7 came back for lost communication with hs2
can. modules on that circuit are gwm hud, ipmb, tbm, pscm,
ocsm, rem, abs, and sccm checeked history for any repairs done recent
found that vehicle had vct replaced perforemd visual inspection of
harness that would of been removed when the repair was down harness was
ok. performed network test and all modules that are listed on hs2 can
failed. checked fuses f15 and f12 in bjb .and fuses are all ok. looking
at the wiring diagram for that networked picked the module that was the
farthest away from the gwm which is the abs and checked for resistance.
with my volt meter checked for
26 to pin 14 in the abs connector and had 12o
decide to do
separately load test c135-26 to gwm c2431 pin18 passed then load test
c135-14 to c2431 -17 and passed which tells me that the circuit in
question is good. i then went and hooked up my breakout box the the gwm
and checked for resistance and reading was 160ohm which is high when
unplugged gwm and ohmed out connector c2431 pin 17 and 18 ohm out at
120 which is good replaced the gateway module and programmed. cleared
codes and took vehicle for multiple road test to verify repair vehicle
is ok at this time"

Just a few hours after getting the truck back on April 15th the Powertrain light and Check Engine light came back ON and the truck would not go over 4000 RPM, dropped it off at the dealership on April 16th.

I was hoping you could point me in the right direction, thank you again man.

I had my 2020 3.5 truck updated due to the recall showing up on Ford pass. After the update it feels like it is down on power, my mpg went down 4 mpg, and it seems like it it’s shifting weird at times. I drive my truck 120 miles a day so I’m pretty in tune with how it feels. I called my local ford dealer and they told me to run the truck for at least 1000 miles because the truck needs to relearn. Is this the truth or are they just stringing me along. Thanks

Just brought my 2017 f150 in because of startup rattle. They are replacing the cam phasers which are still under warranty, which is good.

This same thing has been happening since the 1st generation EB going back to 2011. I owned a 2013 EB F150. Hard to believe it is 2021 now and still the same thing all these TSB, and cancelling the old TSB and on and on. The new PowerBoost is interesting but I don't want to fight with a new vehicle.

Thank you so much, great job. My 2017 F150 3.5 eco boost had cam phasers replaced IAW TSB20-2191 in August 2020. The Rattling became worse. I took the truck into a different dealer in March they repaced the Cam phasers again using a newer TSB. The problem continued. I took the truck in last week and after being told that they couldn't hear the rattle i asked if there were any new TSB or CSP bulletins. After looking into they said that yes there was a new TSB but as they read it they saw that Ford was recommending that it not be done due to the possibility of transmission problem, So here i am still listening to that Rattle and worrying about what kind of damage is being done. It seems to me that as you described in another video that the rattle is associated with a lack of lubrication in the CAM system. The rattle goes away usually after 5 minutes or so, sometimes if i hit the gas peddle quickly it goes away. I was wondering about the amount that Ford covered under the warranty work, that doesn't give the shop much motivation to deal with this problem.
Thank you for the concise and accurate explanation, unlike my 3 brothers who spent their lives as auto mechanics I am not mechanically inclined So this helps me understand a lot better what is going on.

Had the reprogram done when it came out, 4 days later got the recall for the cam phasers tobe replaced. Had that done within 2 days, and have not had problems with the rattle.

First and foremost, thank you for the very informative videos. I have a 2017 F150 3.5 FX4 with 56K miles on it. Has been at the dealership for the past 4 months now, tried to get the lemon law applied, but was declined. Was wondering if Ford is going to refund the customers for the monthly vehicle loan that it had been I at the shop? Is anyone going with a lawyer? I tried to get the truck bought off from the dealership, but they refuse to buy it, will only take it as a trade in and I would have to purchase one of their new vehicles. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Again, thanks for all the info.

I'm curious to having my camphaser fixed, but have already had the 21B10 update that also messed something up in my transmission

So I had this update done when it first came out. Didn’t notice any problems other than the transmission really wants to get to 9th as soon as possible. No shudder though, or maybe? I noticed today only on the freeway (70+ mph) I get a clunk when passing. It’s the 10th to 8th downshift. Every time I do it, clunk. Is this related to the update? Or is it something different? It’s definitely a clunk and not a shudder. I think I just noticed it now because it’s only freeway speeds and traffic was light until recently due to covid

I have a 2011 that has been rattling for a while. I just want to replace all the parts myself, is there any way you could get me the part numbers for the updated phasers and timing chain etc. thank you so much I greatly appreciate it!!

This was a response from Ford on a forum regarding the issue "Thank you for the description. The old PCM programming cannot be installed into the vehicle, however engineering has determined the root cause of the transmission shudder. The new PCM programming can cause a concern with the camshaft journals to surface. The journals may have excessive clearance and allow oil pressure to drain from the VCT system, resulting in a VCT performance concern. You can verify the root cause by disconnecting the oil pressure control solenoid near the crankshaft pulley and starting the engine. This will default the pressure to maximum and the issue should go away. If this is the case continue with replacement of the cylinder head assemblies and all four camshafts. Thank You! Ford Technical Assistance Center"
So what does this mean...

Thank you VERY much for the foot to the floor, and crank for oil pressure. My truck will last longer. Is there a way to override the high idle at the start for cat warm-up?
