2017 F150 VCT cam phaser rattle before and after fix

128,000 miles. I replaced VCT actuators (Phasers) and sound went away. Found passenger side intake phaser was not locking, and thus allowing the cam to slap around. Also did timing chains and tensioners. Engine is super quiet now.

My ‘18 expedition is currently at the dealer getting this fixed as we speak. Been in there for about a week. Power train warranty covers it 👍🏽 will be happy to get it back with no more rattling!

I'm planning to do this myself soon on my 2017 with 102k. Wondering if you had any issues or things to watch out for? Trouble sealing the timing cover, oil leaks, etc? Did you consider replacing the oil pickup tube while you had it apart? I'm thinking to replace the pickup tube just to make sure there's no blockage that would starve the engine of oil and cause another failure prematurely. Thanks

My 18 has the rattle at start up, what components were replaced?

I noticed this exact noise on my 2017 and mentioned it at an oil change, service department told me they didn't notice and would have to charge me for the labor of a diagnostic to look. smh

Change your oil at 4-5k. Won’t happen again

Did you do this yourself? If so how hard was it. Ford wants to charge me 4k for this repair saying they remove cab to do it

Yeah, just give it a little. I doubt they revised those cam phasers. Same parts that broke

Hahaha I did the same thing with my 18 after the cam phasers were replaced at Ford.

Eco bust engines. Just won’t hold up. Have a 18 expedition with 30k miles sounds like a diesel every morning. Ford says it’s normal. Don’t think so!
