Learn Why are diabetics always thirsty and hungry and pass large volumes of urine
In normal healthy individuals, whenever there is decreased water content in the body,
2 Things happen.
1. ADH hormone is secreted from the posterior pituitary
2. You Feel Thirsty
ADH hormone (Antidiuretic Hormone) causes water retention by the kidneys by lowered urine output.
When you drink water and thirst is quenched and it restores the normal water content of the body.
In Diabetes, the patients have high blood sugar and the kidney knows that glucose is not a waste product, so it keeps on reabsorbing glucose. BUT there is a limit , a threshold and when plasma glucose concentrations exceed a threshold, glucose appears in the urine.
Kidneys remove the excess sugar by drawing in more water from the body to get the excess glucose out.
Since more and more water is used to excrete glucose out, the signal is sent to the brain that the body is losing water, and the brain makes you feel thirsty and you start drinking water and this wouldn’t quench your thirst as the blood sugar levels are constantly high, this goes on and on.
This is Unquenchable Thirst. You may drink lots of water and still feel thirsty, also called Polydipsia.
