In this video, we’re going to talk about excessive thirst. Excessive thirst is typically a symptom of something else going on. We’re going to cover why you might be experiencing excessive thirst, and what to do about it.

A few causes of excessive thirst:

1. Habit
Some people drink a lot of water simply out of habit, but they’re not really thirsty. However, drinking a lot of water and not exercising could lead to a condition called hyponatremia. Hyponatremia is a situation where you have low sodium.

2. Diabetes
If you consume a lot of sugar, or you have a blood sugar problem, this could cause you to lose more water. This loss of water will then trigger something in your brain that tells you to drink more water. With this situation, we’re talking about diabetes mellitus.

3. Low potassium
If you don’t eat vegetables, and you’re not taking a potassium supplement, you could become potassium deficient. A potassium deficiency alone could cause excessive thirst.

4. High sodium
A diet high in sodium and low in potassium could cause excessive thirst. Foods with hidden sodium like MSG can also cause this issue.

5. Drugs (diuretics, steroids, psych drugs)
Certain drugs can cause excessive thirst.

6. High calcium
Having high amounts of calcium in the blood is called hypercalcemia. This condition can trigger similar effects to diabetes, including excessive thirst. One rare cause of hypercalcemia is cancer. Other potential causes could be hyperparathyroidism, lithium, or high amounts of vitamin D.

Remedies for excessive thirst:
• Drink when you’re thirsty
• Get enough sea salt in your diet (about 1 tsp.)
• Get on a low carb diet
• Consume lots of foods high in potassium

I want to thank you Dr Berg for breaking my overhydration habit. I stumbled upon your 2014 video a few weeks ago regarding the 8-glass-a-day myth and subsequently I substantially reduced my fluid intake from 2.5-3litres of fluid per day to more like 1.25-1.75 per day (generally only drinking when I'm thirsty). As a result I've gained a lot more mental clarity and the strange light-headedness I'd feel before has now disappeared, which I attribute to lowering my fluid intake (ironically, I'd try to remedy said symptoms by drinking more water). Ever since I stopped I've been visiting the toilet about 1/4 the time, my body's craving for excessive fluid has dropped and I overall feel much better. Just one of the multitude of ways you've improved my health and overall well-being. Thank you good doctor.

Years ago, I heard that I should drink water all day long, so I've gotten into the "habit" of drinking water, even when I wasn't thirsty. Time to break this habit! Thank you!

Cucumber is basically water in vegetable form so I consume it regularly to get extra water.

Counter-intuitive, but a glass of salt water just fixed my thirst after taking your high potassium electrolyte powder. Thanks for the tip, Dr. Berg!

Dr Berg, please make a video about heavy periods that many women have. When you go to doctor, they always give birth control pills which makes my bleeding worse. I am anemic because of this even if I eat red meat a lot. Every month I loose so much blood that I cannot evren stand up during my period not to mention the pain it causes. Keto solved my many health problems but not this one. Thanks for all your effort and all the beneficial information 👍

I've been doing strict keto for five months now. For years I have been excessively thirsty - I literally can't go anywhere without a big bottle of water in tow because my mouth gets so dry I can hardly swallow! Prior to starting keto I have no doubt that my blood sugar was probably in the diabetic range (I never actually checked). Now I do check, and although it's still a little higher than it should be (my range so far has been between 90 and 106, and the 106 was only one time). I salt all my food with Himalayan pink salt. I eat avocados as well as use Dr. Berg's electrolyte powder for potassium. I'm not taking any medications. Despite all this, I STILL have this problem with excessive thirst - my eyes even get dry, especially during the night. I keep water by my bed at night because, again, I wake up so dry I have to have some water. Then of course I wake up to pee. I would LOVE to not have to be a slave to my water bottle anymore! I feel like I'm doing everything I should be, and it's still not helping. Is there something else that can be causing it? Does it just take more time to get to a more "normal" level of thirst? Is there something else I should be doing? Please help! TIA
