Setting up M4 Max MacBook Pro for Programming

Just in case anyone is still deciding... I was torn between the M4 Pro 14c (48GB RAM, 512GB storage, 16-inch) and the M4 Pro 12c (24GB RAM, 512GB storage, 14-inch). I ultimately went with the 14-inch version and decided to stress test it using Android Studio and Xcode simultaneously, comparing its performance to an M3 Pro 11c (18GB RAM, 512GB storage, 14-inch) provided by my company.

For the test, I ran Android Studio, Xcode, Brave with three tabs (one playing a video), one Android emulator playing another video (admittedly unrealistic), and one iOS simulator playing yet another video, all while compiling the Xcode benchmark project. The M4 Pro 14 compiled the project twice in approximately 140 seconds each time, while the M3 Pro managed to compile it only once in 250 seconds.

During the test, memory usage on the 24GB model hovered around 19GB, and I couldn’t max it out or trigger swap usage. The M4 Pro 14-core with 48GB RAM is probably overkill for most people. If you truly need that much RAM, you’ll know for sure.

Should I buy MacBook Pro or Mac mini both base cores m4 pro chip 24gb 512gb? For programming, video and photo editing for beginners, watching yt videos and basic general web browsing stuff and etc, and for using as desktop setup almost always and still not sure if I will take it out for university too

14inch max🤡🤡 even m4pro drops PL1 from 46w to 40w.
