M4 Pro vs M4 Max MacBook Pro - Don't Waste Your Money!

We already have leaked benchmarks for the new M4 Pro and M4 Max chips and this may be the fastest computer in existence at least when it comes to the CPU and we haven't even seen the M4 Ultra yet... but even though both of these new laptops are insane with power, which one is the best value for most people?

As much as I detest the horribly trite shocked face click-bait thumbnails, I decided to watch, ugh.

My main issue here as somebody genuinely considering the M4 vs the Pro, is that I don't know how I feel about losing 500gb storage for $100 more. In 2024 I wish apple would default to 1tb but we're even lucky we got 500. I feel like windows has spoiled me with cheap NVMEs.

Once you get your hands on it what I would like to know is how the M4 pro compares to an Max chip in terms of graphics performance, in historical terms as well as current.

The difference from M4 Pro to M4 Max is not only the GPU, but a much faster Ram too.

And faster Memory Bandwidth. Thats why the Max cost more. Not only Cores, but also RAM, Storage and Memory Bandwidth. Furthermore keep in mind in some markets you cant spec the Pro with more than 36 Gb of memory. If your job requires it you have to go to M4 Max.

Great analysis. However, you have forgotten the media engines, which are double that of M4 Pro in the M4 Max.

Keep up the great work Greg, I always come here for up to date reviews/advice, I'm glad you're thinking about the complexities of these different options because it makes my head spin!

No, you're not just getting a bump in GPU cores when going from the top Pro to the base Max. You're also getting a second media engine, literally cutting export times in half for supported video codecs

There are numerous videos about how various M4 Macs might perform. Some 'reviewers' have never seen or touched an M4 Mac, others might have one but cannot report anything themselves, so there are leaks which may or may not be genuine. But in a week or so there should be more dependable reporting once actual M4 Macs are delivered or NDAs expire. But we cannot resist looking now, even at the reports of M4 Ultra machines which may never exist.
For me it's all academic, as my main use revolves around standard business applications, particularly spreadsheets. I'm unique amongst Mac owners as I don't edit video and wouldn't know how to. Thus the need for speed, storage space and memory are easily satisfied by the lowest spec M series Mac. Even so my main machine is a basic M1 Mac Studio, bought in March 2022 and I can't ever see any operational reason to upgrade it.
But its fun to speculate, as long as I don't spend any money!

I'm looking forward to spending other peoples' money on one of these new Macs

Yeah, being able to get 64gb ram on the Mini M4 pro but not on the M4pro Macbook Pro surprised me too. I guess I’m the MBP Apple is pushing people to upgrade to the Max if they want 64gb

The Geekbench 6 chart at the 6'29'' mark seems off. Are the lengths of the two middle bars correct? (Or do they need to be switched?) The chart at the 6'44'' seems to be correct, though.

Oops, now you’ve just made me think twice about the configuration I was just about to order. I thought the absolute best deal for me was the MB Pro with 14/20, 48GB memory and a 1TB SSD… Then I saw some comments on YT about the Pro Max with the 14/32, 36GB memory would be best for video editing.
So now you gotta help me. This is of course a more expensive option but I’m upgrading from an M1 Mac Mini because I realized I needed a laptop after all. Since I usually buy a machine that’ll last me long, and I’m editing video a lot, it would be a thing to do. But my editing is not more than 2-3 cameras 4K footage and no fancy effects, and I’m also editing photos in various apps (no Adobe products) where I noticed my M1 Mini (w.16GB memory) struggled frequently.
So is the GPU that significantly better in the Max (at 14/32) compared to the Pro (14/20) for me?
I'm also thinking about the longevity when all the apps and MacOS are getting their upgrades in the future.
The Unified memory is also an issue here, I tend to use many apps at the same time when I go wild on my computer and 48GB on the Pro is more than 32GB on the Max option....
Puzzled....

I ordered the space black 14 inch M4 PRO MBP with - 12 core CPU - 16 core GPU - 24GB of Ram and a 2TB drive.

The power is wild. As someone who frequently upgrades, I think the M4 will hold me over until we get TSMCs A16

You're also getting dual video encoders with the Max. Big upgrade.
