Columbine and Inferno were two of the most amazing books I ever read. I’m glad you mentioned them. I remember when Columbine happened. This book handles it very well.

I can’t wait to read Cultish, but I haven’t gotten my hands on it yet.

How Dare the Sun Rise is another amazing book!

Educated also blew my mind last year when I read it, very interesting memoir with her very upsetting upbringing for sure. Cultish is one I need to look into now, thanks for the recs!

I haven't actually read very many memoirs, but one of my favorites of all time is The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls. It's pretty similar to Educated, since both are about women who grew up in unconventional families then left to pursue their own path in life. It's soooo good, I recommend The Glass Castle if you like Educated.
Two memoirs on my TBR I really want to get to are Braiding Sweetgrass and Greetings from Utopia Park.

Very interesting recommendations! I've read Educated and have some of the others on my radar. But so glad to hear about the Amanda Montell books! I'm a linguist and I'm really interested in general audience books about linguistics, so these look very interesting to me!

I also love memoirs. I would say I read quite a few per month. Most of these are ones I've wanted to read! I also really enjoy essay collections. Educated is very similar to my own life experience in many ways. It's a hard read, but for me it made me feel less alone. I'm a Tegan and Sara fan but I haven't read their memoir yet. I just read Wordslut and it was really good. It makes me interested in Cultish. My favorite memoir is My Body is a Book of Rules. My favorite essay collection is tied between Ace and Disability Visibility.

Have you read Smoke Gets in Your Eyes by Caitlin Doughty? You talking about the pathologist memoir made me think maybe you’d like it! I haven’t read it myself but I’ve heard a lot of positive reviews.
