About IIHS:
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) is an independent, nonprofit scientific and educational organization dedicated to reducing deaths, injuries and property damage from motor vehicle crashes through research and evaluation and through education of consumers, policymakers and safety professionals.
IIHS was founded by auto insurance associations back in 1959—incidentally, the same year Volvo introduced the three-point safety belt. Since then, the IIHS has continued its work to reduce the frequency of collisions and to minimize the rate and severity of injuries (and monetary damage) in the crashes that cannot be prevented.

This helps me understand how my father died in a crash in 2009. His airbag deployed but his skull was still crushed in from the impact. RIP Dad.

It's really interesting. 2012 is when they introduced this test of course, and you can see the development cycles of the cars. When the next gen was designed with this test in mind

I just looked it up, the reason cars did so poorly in 2012 is because 2012 was the first year the IIHS introduced small overlap crash tests. Before that they mostly did moderate over lap crash test. A small overlap crash test puts more pressure on a small area, so all these cars would do much better in a moderate overlap crash test.

At 6:17, he doesn't care about that wall he just hit, he just wants to turn up the tunes.

Kind of glad we have the IIHS. Big car companies tried too fool the IIHS by only putting protection on the driver side getting false safety ratings. the passenger side was not as safe. I hope the Big companies got fine for that one.

This might be the hardest category in all crash test scenarios. High speed, small impact area.

Amazing how many of the steering wheel airbags just bounced around uselessly, offering no protection for the driver. And shocking to see how many side curtain airbags didn't deploy, failing to contain the driver's head movements.

That must be quite a job cleaning up after each of these tests. Every one starts with a completely pristine room with no debris or skid marks, crash obstacle devoid of any marks, etc.

1:03:29 a screwdriver coming from the engine??

90% of the vehicles tested had (A) pillar deformation and the dash intruded towards the drivers body. It was also clear starting in 2012 that the Mercedes and BMW had the strongest subframe probably from higher strength steel to protect the passenger compartment. Volkswagen seem to do well here too. The latter years for the Lincoln and even more dramatic failure in the Cadillac, the whole frame of the driver’s side just started to crumple front all the way to the back. I was surprised at how poorly the reliable Asian cars perform. The frames were just not as rigid as the BMW’s, Merced’s or Volkswagen’s passenger bubble, that was clear. The large trucks too, major cabin deformation. If the car doesn’t contain the high strength steel passenger compartment it’s basically a tin can on wheels.

It's so sad how not a lot of people know about this organization and how they can save so many lives.

16:54 I don't know how that Chevy Sonic didn't get a Poor rating, the side curtain airbag deployed LATE. I think that's kind of worse than not having them at all...

17:03 It’s bad when the airbag deploys so late it traps the occupants head outside the car…

To be honest, even though this test was introduced in 2012, most of the vehicles in this video were designed WAY before then. We didn't start seeing vehicles pass this test until there were vehicle models had a full model year change (not just refresh). This test is actually very difficult to get right and took some re-engineering of vehicles.

I remember when side curtains and seat airbags were a “luxury” thing.
Now almost all cars that want a good or acceptable crash rating need to have them!!

The Beetle and Jetta had the least cabin intrusion.
A small airbag in the area of the a/c vent to the left of the driver would reduce a lot of head/face injuries...though in all, major leg/foot injuries are a certainty.
