I drove one of these for 3 years, it was great. Very reliable. - odds of being in an accident like this isn't very likely.

With that being said, I wish more car buyers checked safety ratings before purchasing something.

This is a reliable car, but switching from this to a 2017 or 2018 Elantra would provide far more safety for these kinds of crashes. I always tell people if they can help it, to avoid SUBcompact and go with regular compact... the latter is safer and nicer but not much more money. I also observe that most vehicles designed before 2014 did not do too well with small overlap because that was approximately the year after IIHS had pressured automakers to beef up protection in the structure. Case in point: A 2018 Elantra would be safer than a 2013 Sonata on several accounts.... Side and Small overlap. It keeps getting better with time: Even the 2018 year models me and my family drive do not have the crash avoidance technology that vehicles designed in the '20s have.

its amazing to me how much worse the small overlap test is compared to moderate overlap lots of cars i would call acceptable or good at the moderate look very poor on the small overlap
