Welcome to the second season of the Coffee Break Sessions! This is the first episode of the new season where I'm playing 7" records only. The majority of the records in this episode are from the Altin Mikrofon (Golden Microphone) song contest series organized by Hurriyet, a Turkish best-selling newspaper at the time, which would provide opportunities for those who would like to engage in pop music. The prize of the contest was the ability to record the winning song and a performing job at the Oriental Casino where the contest was held. You will find Haramiler, Mavi Isiklar, Selcuk Alagoz, and more in this set.

Greatings from your neighbour, Greece. This music is phenomenal in so many ways, I have no the ability to describe, I 'll just say that is an incredibly genious mix of western and southern sounds.

Almost ten years ago I spent a month in Istambul. The country has its issues and I was there in the middle of the Gezi Park protests and got teargassed, but in between, I enjoyed myself fully. By the end of the month, all I wanted was to learn Turkish and maybe spend a solid year or two living there. The best parties I ever went to were there. This is making me miss the city like crazy. I hope the world population behaves so we can all travel more safely in the near future.

Reminds me of my grandmother, her roots were from Edirne/Adrianoupoli and Kadikoy/Chalkidona. Greetings from Selanik/Thessaloniki!

I'm half-Turkish and sadly not that family with Turkish music. I absolutely love this playlist.

The most unbelievable thing is that these songs are from the times of our grands but even they have had no idea about these genres. It was then kind of an upper class activity to listen to any kind of music at that time. Furthermore, these could be called counterculture examples which was the most popular genre in the era. To inform the foreigners, an overwhelming amount of the lyrics are, amazingly, anonymous Turkish folk songs. So, you will not believe how stupid we have become but even the most intellectual and proficient listeners today would, Im sure, look down on these as to the lyrics being from roots of villages their grands belonged to. Whatever, soaked in enthusiasm, love from Turkey. Keep on rocking.

Probably very few foreigners now that the founder of Atlantic Records was also a Turkish Jazz enthusiast. He basically shaped 50 years of US and world charts. From Ray Charles to Rolling Stones, From Eric Clapton to Quincy Jones. Aretha Franklin and many more. To know much more you watch his Documentary on youtube. Ahmet Ertegun RIP.
