Don’t let anyone deter you from pursuing a degree/ career choice that YOU want to do. Only YOU can decide if it’s worth it or not.

I'm a MHRM graduate and have been working in the field for about 10 years. Your video is super spot on. Personally, I stay in the Talent Acquisition portion of HR because that is what is fulfilling to me. I love changing lives by offering people jobs and meeting individuals with quality talent that could bring interesting skills and outlooks into an organization.

I personally stay away from Labor Relations as it's a very sticky job due to laws and compliance. Benefits and payroll is simply boring to me. So overall, if Talent Acquisition was not under the HR umbrella, I would definately not continue with this career.

Hi Shane, just wanted to correct you a bit. HR does not fire anyone, it is the manager(s) of the individual that fires the employee. HR is just the medium to ensure that the termination process is in line with the law. HR also does not hire anyone, again it is the manager that makes the call to hire someone. HR just weeds out the applicants that do not qualify for the role. Then HR presents the most qualified individuals to the hiring manager. Then the manager conducts interviews and lets HR know who they chose for the role.

I been doing HR for the past 2 1/2 years. I love it and decided to go back to school to get my degree. I currently don't make alot of money only 17 an hour working for a major retailer. But I definitely can't wait to get my degree to learn and make money at a better company..

I would say this degree doesn’t matter as much as the work experience you have on your resume does. Definitely try to get an internship while in college.

I have my BA in HR Management. It s a very versatile degree because EVERYONE in EVERY industry needs HR folks. Every company has people. Plus you can use the degree as a springboard foundation into specific disciplines such as Occupational Safety and Workers Comp which is my specialty.

Good video! It’s hard for an introvert HR Pro like me but I manage.

Just a tip for the new HR grads! Networking will help you get your first HR job. My first HR job was as an generalist with a small company where I had to do everything HR related. So I had experience with all HR areas. I connected and networked with the owner a year before they offered me a job.

I have been in HR for 7 years working in sales compensation and I love it! I work mostly with leadership and sales teams building incentive plans and variable pay options with bonuses and commission plans. I got into HR before graduating college and make a nice salary.

The statement on “don’t necessary need an Hr degree”, let me clarify the following. If you have a psychology degree you will face more difficulties to get your first job experience than if you have an HR degree. Why? Because, HR degree has specific courses that teach you in depth the technicalities of the field. In psychology you learn behavior but not compensation, benefits, staffing, etc. however, I do agree with your statement on double majoring. In terms of double majoring you can still pair HR with many options not only psychology.

HRM doesn't require a full degree, being someone who did operations and logistics, I got into HR with little effort and found it to be rather easy. An associate degree is all that is necessary.

Hey shane you should do a video on "careers with best work life balance". Or a video on supply chain management and/or logistics would be awesome. Keep up the great work!

A lot of companies require an HR degree to get into HR so it puts you ahead of others.

ah I’m exited to graduate with my BSHRM this spring! My favorite thing is that HR is extremely flexible when it comes to your industry. I wanted a lot of freedom in my career path so I’m eager to explore. I’m going to be working in the financial services industry after graduation 🤩

It absolutely is worth it, or really any degree if you want to get into HR. I have not been able to climb to the next level in my career making well into 6 figures because of my lack of a degree. Without a degree, I've still managed to climb up into making over $70k (but that's with 10 years experience). With a degree, literally any degree, if you really excel in HR, you have the potential of making well into $120-$150k, and $200k or more for CHRO level.

I studied Marketing and ended up in HR as a Talent Acquisition & HRIS Manager. I think if you want to succeed in HR, you need to combine it with something else. I see a big demand for HR Information System specialist (IT) and Project management, and someone with analytic capabilities, because more and more processes are automated. So either you become the "people" specialist or an HRIS specialist. Talent management and Employer branding are also increasingly demanding, so if you have a marketing background, this could be an interesting career choice.

Great video, Shane, !!! me as an HR person agree with everything said, especially with the cons. The down side can also be demotivation with the company, it's managers, promotion chances, salaries just to mention a few. I got a burn out from this profession after 10 years of working there. Conflicts are usual thing but also when you know the company from inside, you start re-considering many things around you. I may record a video about why I quit HR in the future.
