Please note that this quick tip only applies if you want to use the YouTube endcard! Otherwise I recommend actually cropping your footage to the desired aspect ratio.

 FAQ
Why do you make these lame tutorials when we wanna see real machinima?
– I know the target audience for these tutorials is pretty small. But if I would inspire only a single creator to start their own machinima channel, my goal is completed.

Didn't you get some facts wrong here?
– If I did I apologize. But this is how I do it. If you know a better way, please share it with the community.

Can you rate my machinima?
– No. I don't have the time. I'm working around the clock to produce content.

There is a rather useful guide for an alternative method to getting letterbox without having to crop the image in post.

This guide explains how you can get 21:9 ultrawide aspect ratio (21:9 gets automatic letterboxing when played on an 16:9 player, like youtube's) on your exports instead of cropped 16:9, along with some other useful tips (for instance, how to get higher resolution like 4k). The best thing about this is that this method allows you to get specific aspect ratios and resolutions without its respective monitor display. Also imo exporting in 21:9 is better than cropping 16:9, since you'll only be worried about *showing* extra footage to the sides rather than *losing* footage up and down.

Why can't you just put two black rectangles at the top and bottom of the screen? At least thats what I do lol

Why not just add a new layer on top of your footage, in whatever 3rd party editing software you are in, and crop it? For example I just use a new adjustment layer in Adobe Premiere Pro and then crop the top and bottom to 10.0, Is this technically the wrong ratio? This was still very helpful though because getting an old school look is not exactly easy.

Thanks for the site man. I'd normally just use a stock template from Google.

But if you do this, the video will dtill be in 16:9, just look like it's not. If someone with a widescreen monitor were to watch the video, they'd see black bars on the bottom and the sides.
Why not just change the size of the video itself in the project menu/ settings?
