Every time a seed is replanted over another plant, it grows deeper. Soil regeneration is possible in nature. I know I changed my hard clay dirt to rich black soil in a couple of years. It's amazing how plants do that. Like sunflowers are like nature's jack hammer. Their powerful roots cracks the earth until it is the tallest plant in the yard.
