Swanson always comes across as overly mannered in her silents, although that worked perfectly for her in SUNSET BOULEVARD. I thought the pairing of her and Warner simply didn't work, primarily because of the age difference - she's 24 and he's 47 years old in 1923. Lucille La Verne steals the scene whenever she appears - there's even a bit of upstaging Swanson at one point. Warner had an impressive career, appearing in a slew of major films - KING OF KINGS, A TALE OF TWO CITIES, IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE, MR DEEDS GOES TO TOWN, LOST HORIZON, YOU CAN'T TAKE IT WITH YOU, MR SMITH GOES TO WASHINGTON, THE DEVIL AND DANIEL WEBSTER, THE TEN COMMANDMENTS (1956), and of course SUNSET BOULEVARD.
