The Big Picture - UNSC & Permanent Seat For India

Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu on Monday said that India, which represents one sixth of the global population, has a rightful claim to the permanent membership of the United Nation’s Security Council. One of the key historic reasons for India’s quest for a permanent seat at the UNSC was to ensure protection of national interest in crucial diplomatic moments when the organ takes up issues such as Kashmir. Delivering a joint G4 statement on behalf of Brazil, Germany, India and Japan, India’s Permanent Representative Syed Akbaruddin in 2016 stated that the grouping was eager for a forward discussion on UNSC permanent membership and reforms. Diplomats have blamed China for having quietly carried out a campaign to stop India’s efforts at the UNSC. Veteran diplomats have said that the latest UNSC meeting on Kashmir which was convened following an initiative from China showed that India will have to show more stamina to stop China from using the organ against India’s interest. The issue of expanding the UNSC and the Text Based Negotiation is expected to come up in the next UN General Assembly session in September. On this edition of the big picture we will analyse UNSC reforms and a permanent seat for India

Let's grow at 10℅ for 10 years and they will ask us to join.
Best way forward to get into elite group.
And to grow at such level every individual must do ones best.
Once we able to make our population productive there will be fantastic results.
I am sure in my life time india will make it possible to get there.
Jai Hind.

UNSC & permanent seat for India

Introduction:
India has one-sixth of the global population and is one of the founding members.
India has always respected the institution and participated in it.
Delivering a joint G4 statement on behalf of Brazil, Germany, India, and Japan, India's Permanent Representative in 2016 stated that the grouping was eager for a forward discussion on UNSC permanent membership and reforms.
In reality, there is a decline of the west.

Need for the move:
A leader in Peacekeeping operations
Upholder of principles and credentials.
India's clout in the UN has increased, eg: election of an Indian in ICJ.
International yoga day with 177 countries.

Impediments:
India is opposed by China and Pakistan
Germany is opposed by UK, France, Spain, and Italy.
Brazil opposed by Argentina, Mexico.
African countries haven't come up with a candidate.
India has been following its own policy. As in the case of bombings in Libya, where India had opposed initially and then abstained in the vote.
All the P5 countries have their own angularities.
China’s urge to India to leave G-4
UK, US, and France will not cede that the west is on a decline.

Japan's inclusion is facing problems as its economic clout is declining and China is opposing strongly.

China's role:
China in its own perception has equated India with Pakistan. Pakistan is its tool.
China on the behest of Pakistan called for informal consultations.
Wuhan warmth was considered temporary.
Wuhan summit did not discuss-Dalai Lama, border disputes, Pakistan issues.
China is more or less isolated in UNSC. As in the case of Hafiz Saeed.

India & Pakistan:
GDP of Pakistan less than that of Mumbai
Even China is finding it difficult to bail out Pakistan.

Way Forward:
France is supporting openly.
America plays a different game altogether.
Managing the transition
Xi’s upcoming visit in October.
UNGA session is going to take place in September and hopefully, India would be part of P-6 whether it would be part of P-5 or not.
If the Indian economy can grow at 10% for 10 years then the members will ask India to be a member.
India should not over-invest in it.

We should not beg or demand for UNSC seat instead we should be in a position where the world countries expect us to be in UNSC and P5 has no option but to welcome us...that day we should enter the council with full pride....

Focus should be on strengthening our economy .as Dr. Manmohan Singh suggested that if we grow our gdp 10% for a decade the ultimately India will be parallel to P5 members. There is no need to of spending diplomatic capital just to raise this issue . C Raja Mohan also opines the same.

Unless India stands up to the world, no one will respect us. In this world, fear has no place. Only strength respects strength.

It's a shame world's biggest democracy and secular state doesn't have a place in UNSC.

India should support Hong Kong people in their protest in compensation for Permanent seat in United Nation. China too was supported by India for promise to peacefully settle the border issues which China never did rather acted opposite like CPEC and Bhutan chicken neck.

The success of India in getting the support of the world over Kashmir issue itself proves our acumen and diplomatic victory.... There is no need for UN Certification or to be at the UNSC table

Ppl hv always undermined Dr. Manmohan Singh's acumen on International Affairs Or rather at every crucial issue. But his one line statement regarding UNSC seat sums his clarity, vision and insight on issues like this.
