Real Germans know that the true school lunch is the Döner you buy around the corner because you don't want to eat the school lunch

As a german, i had never a slice of bread with Lunch unless it was a soup. And even there it would have been a "Brötchen"

As a German I’d say most common school lunch is a Tupperware with a „Butterbrot“ and an apple which turned brown before break even begins.

We don't eat sliced bread to our warm meals, bread is more for breakfast or dinner (typically cold dinner called "Abendbrot" with cold cuts, cheese and bread, maybe some tomatoes and cucumber). In classic German just the lunch is a warm meal.

I think a more typical (school) dish would have been pairing the Schnitzel with hot cooked potatoes, mashed potatoes or french fries.
Also a cooked vegetable like peas, or a mix of broccoli, cauliflower and carrots (called Kaisergemüse) and a sauce.

Germany doesn't have to worry about art students. That's Austria

When I was in school (yes, in Germany), school lunches were just normal dishes on normal plates with normal cutlery. No plastic tray with weird compartments or anything like that. In the schools I went to it worked like this: Every student could choose between 3 dishes every day. This choice was made in advance online, so it was pretty convenient. At least one of the choices was always vegetarian. Additionally, there sometimes was dessert and / or a salad, but only one, so take it or leave it, no options (Maybe there actually was one every day, it was 10 years ago, so it's all a bit hazy). We never had an apple or bread. We do have a "Pausenbrot" but you make that at home, bring it with you and eat it during the first break, which is after the second period and much shorter than lunch break.

As an American who lived and went to school in Germany, I can tell you we didn't have "school lunch" there. There were snacks you could buy (pastries and such), but the school day ends fairly early. This means you can eat lunch at home or go out to a cafe with friends.

Plus, sliced buttered bread is more a breakfast thing there. Not lunch.

I'd say the idea of a school lunch served on a tray is very pronounced in the anglophone world but not so common in other cultures. In Germany it'd be very unusual. German school lunch resembles more the kind of plating you'd see in a restaurant. Students will get proper plates, bowls, and cutlery. The single dishes are also exactly what you'd expect from a home cooked meal or a restaurant, at least regarding the ingredients (the quality can vary enormously). For example if you get a schnitzel for lunch. It'd be a serving of schnitzel with a vegetable side, some form of a potatoe side, and some sauce arranged on one plate. Most likely you wouldn't get a piece of bread and a random fruit with it. However, you can obviously get fresh fruits and vegetables on top if you want and that should be true for every school. In addition, as other comments already pointed out, rye bread is most often not served with a hot meal (soups excluded) but a stable for a cold breakfast and supper.
