Why debate bullies are so persuasive. #shorts

Bo Seo, an author and two-time world debate champion, believes our public conversations are in crisis. To Seo, our arguing skills have collectively atrophied over recent decades, resulting in bad arguments that have caused many people to lose faith in the idea that productive disagreements are even possible.

That's why Seo suggests a framework called RISA — which stands for "Real, Important, Specific, and Aligned" — to help people pick their fights more wisely and to give conversations the best possible chance of success. RISA helps individuals find a better way to disagree.

Seo believes that by making a contract with the other party and reminding them of the rules, conversations can be productive, and disagreements can lead to progress.

That's what I find so annoying; a person could be accurate about something and just because they don't make a big fuss out of it, people won't believe them, but people will believe loud people who make a big stink out of nothing.

Part of it comes from a culture of seeing the goal of debate as "winning", rather than "understanding" or "exploring". Debate could be much more constructive if we de-emphasized the competitive aspect and demonstrated the power of people using different perspectives in complementary ways to more fully explore a topic. It's like the story of three blind men and an elephant; if they approach it with a competitive mindset, they all fail to capture the truth, only believing in their own narrow perception, but if they approach it in a more collaborative way, they might be able to synthesize their perceptions into something that matches reality.

Damn he explained that so well.

A lot of people don't understand that in a debate 2 people come in with an open mind & are willing to change their perspective given a compelling enough argument. If you know you're not going to change your mind that's not a debate, that's an argument. In that same vein some things should never be up for debate.

It's more of a battle rap than a debate anymore.

Exactly, that's why we have not achieved peace in our global civilization yet. Reason being common people don't understand things critically rather they tend to believe the logics that looks more bold

We have the perception thay holding on your opinion to death is some kind of virtue, when in truth it only shows closemindedness, so even when they're shown in the wrong they can double down and spin it as an heroic last stand to defend their principles.

often people in a debate are arguing to be right rather than trying to find what is true.

An excellent standard is the Nixon vs. Kennedy debate. Those who watched it on TV, concluded that Kennedy won; those who listened on the radio, thought that Nixon won.

I really am tired of the tired expectations we have around “not knowing that much.” Educate yourselves!

It's much easier to win a debate if you're opponent is convinced you have rabid followers to back your play and have retained enough lawyers to avoid prosecution...

Is this bullying or pathos? Never been of a fan of it myself, but Aristotle recommended it.
