As responsible firearms owners, it's imperative that we teach any children in our home about firearms safety, as well as storing our guns securely. Rob Pincus is often asked three questions: when is it appropriate to teach kids about guns, when is it time to teach them how to shoot, and when should kids be instructed about the defensive nature of the firearms in the home? Here's what Rob has to say.

Rob,
Thanks for this. You have presented this in a way I have not heard before. This is essentially the same way you would introduce shooting to someone who is new to shooting. Thanks again and keep up the good work. I real enjoy your stuff.

My Husband said that the first time he shot a gun was when he was 8yrs old; our children learned with BB Guns from the time they were big enough to shoot them.

Never that's when, at least in my house that's the answer.

I was 4 years old when I started shooting. My first gun was a 22lr chipmunk. I grew up around guns my father shot a lot of service rifle so I knew about guns at a very young age, my mother has photos of me at two years old sitting on the porta potty reading shotgun news. When I your child is old enough to realize guns exist, you need to educate them to be responsible and the rules of safety. Just as stated in the video it may not be your home your child finds a gun in unsupervised. They are never to young, especially this day and age when they have the video games and the shooter up movies.

I think once kids are able to know and understand the basics of the 5 safety rules, they should learn about how to handle real firearms or at least proximities. One of the first toys I gave my daughters were non firing toy guns. I taught them to never to actually point them at people because if they ever picked up a real gun, not knowing the difference between a real gun and a toy, they might hurt someone.
