How much training do you need before you can take a firearm, put it on your body, and go out into a public space prepared to defend yourself or others in the community? Rob Pincus takes a wide-ranging look at this subject, covering topics from the Constitution to carry permits, the dynamics of a critical incident, personal responsibility, and the mechanics of firing a gun.

To pick a nit - But, an important one.

The Constitution does not give us any rights - The Constitution only affirms rights that come from the Creator.

As such, no government has a legitimate power to grant or deny any natural right.  Our Bill of Rights only prohibits our government from infringing on our inherent rights.

How true, That is why I tell my students they are welcome to come to the range with me as a guest.  All they need to bring is their ammo. This way I can help them better understand and they get some free training time in.

I love his advice. One can tell he is passionate about it.

Great. This guilt trip pops for me up at a time when ammunition is scarce and extremely expensive.

rights and responsibilities go together.

Well said.  My wife complains about the ammo, until we go to the range.  Train, train, train.  Some of it is really becoming second nature.  I can forget my cell phone, but I do not forget to carry what the "plastic card" authorizes.  Keep up the training.

Great video! it is definitely a person's responsibility to train with a firearm they will be carrying!

How much training do you need? You can never have too much, so as much as you're able to get. No two defensive situations are the best. Laws and equipment are constantly changing and evolving. The more tools you place in your toolbox, the more will be available to address any particular situation. I'd also share my observation that many people that carry tend to train a lot on the shooting side of things, with a small portion related to judgment, but often terribly lack in legal training associated with defensive shooting.

When the brass hits the floor, what happens next? It's a pretty big question that can have just as much negative influence on your life as if the threat was successful in their attack if handled improperly.

As a responsible carrier of a firearm for self defense, one should take the initiative to seek out some training. The problem arises when states mandate training that may be far beyond some peoples means. In most of the country, this is no longer a problem but at one time it was a very real concern. What some anti-gunners wish to subject firearm owners to often far exceeds the reality of what is required for most law enforcement.

Of course, I don't believe in people being forced to pay for a training course before the state "allows" them to own a firearm. For centuries, people learned safe handling of firearms the same way many learn to drive now. Dad taught them.

To me, training is an ongoing process. You are never a professional at anything regardless of how much training or experience. You can always be better and learn more.

Even if you had the unlimited right to carry anytime, anywhere and training there would only be a small minority of folks who would carry everyday. Ideally everyone everywhere would be trained and armed. The world would be a much more polite place to live.
