Thor’s Hammer, Mjolnir, is the most iconic object from Norse mythology.
This was true in Viking times as well as today. Mjolnir is by far the most common Viking amulet found, and its use survived well into the Christian period as a symbol of continued allegiance to the old faith.
But where did Mjolnir, the hammer of the god of Thunder, come from and why was it special?
Mjolnir, pronounced “me-yol-neer”, found its way into the hands of the god of thunder thanks to the machinations of Loki, according to Norse mythology. As a prank, Loki cut off the beautiful golden blond hair of Thor’s wife Sif, removing every strand so that it would never grow back. An angered Thor demanded that Loki replace the hair with something as fine, or face the consequences.

Thank you so much. I go to a school where we have to pick a topic we want to learn about and then build something. (Otherwise known as a big waste of time). We weren't given enough time to pick a subject that we really wanted to learn. Because of the release of God of War Ragnarök and because I'm such a Marvel geek, I chose that I wanted to learn about Norse Mythology and I wanted to learn about Mjolnir. I've studied a great deal of Norse culture and never had a good answer to one question. Why does Thor wield a hammer and not an axe? Hammers or mauls were common Norse work tools but not combat arms.

I wear Mjolnir like my invaded displaced rebellious ancestors to show we are not invaders and to show we are the rebel that rebelled against the invaders that threatened to melt our sacred Mjolnir necklace to turn it into a executioner's cross called a crucifix that is very depressing to wear. I also wear Mjolnir because it reminds me of my ancestry that is almost lost to destruction. I also wear Mjolnir to keep me cultural so I only buy from Norse fair trade merchants and so I reduce land fill and save money by buying only what is cultural to me so I am not poor and homeless again like I am meant to be because of invaders. I also wear Mjolnir for it empowers me helps me do hard task with ease.
