Why 2 Carolinas?

Показать описание
Transcript: Most Americans don’t know why there are two Carolinas.
North Carolina and South Carolina actually started as a single territory called Carolana. This territory stretched from the Albemarle Sound in present-day North Carolina to the St. John's River in Florida.
In 1663, King Charles II granted a new charter of this colony to eight English noblemen as a reward for their support and loyalty.
During this transition, the colony was renamed from Carolana to Carolina, but the sheer size of the territory made it difficult to govern effectively.
The northern part was characterized by small farms and less economic development, whereas, the southern part developed large plantations and a more robust economy.
Additionally, North Carolina was spending more resources to defend against the Tuscarora tribe than South Carolina.
These increasing tensions between the two regions led the King of England to eventually claim South Carolina for the British crown, leaving North Carolina under the control of the British lords.
