Apple was caught slowing down old iphone in EU and was fined for it. Did that stop them in US? NO. 😮

You are so right!! They purposely slow them down, so you buy a new one!!!

I’ve had my iPhone 12 for years. It broke and I needed a new one…went online and got a refurbished iPhone 12😂 didn’t have to learn anything new and it was only $200 bucks. My friends were like why didn’t you just get the new one, I was like bc I can comfortably buy this one…I can’t comfortably buy the other one without having to sacrifice something else and I was not about to get one on credit and pay for it for two years. Solid advice…not enough people get this concept and it shows

I had a 2011 Asus laptop that the hard drive was replaced under warranty early on. The thing that killed earlier this year was that the motherboard fried.
We took it to a shop tha ran diagnostics to confirm. This shop also has used computers, we picked up a Lenovo Ideapad 3 and had them install a 1Tb SSD hard drive, all for less than $700.
As sad as I was to let my Asus go, I'm very happy not having to buy a brand new laptop, and we saved probably $800 or more!! 👍

And when is time to upgrade, never, ever get the first generation of a new model.
Get the last generation of the outgoing model right before the new model release.

Why?
First gen models are always buggy and overpriced for what you get. They usually don't have a lot of integrations developed yet.
Plus, last gen models are priced low to clear out inventory. They have ALL the bugs worked out and they are super stable.

This is how I consistently get a minimum of 5 years of great performance out of every phone I've owned!

OK, I agree with this to a point. I keep my phones until they stop getting security updates (~5 years). I work in the cybersecurity field, and I highly recommend not keeping a smartphone past that date. When new vulnerabilities get discovered you won't get patches for them, and the biggest vector attackers use is unpatched vulnerabilities. Advocating keeping an iPhone 5s in 2024 that hasn't been patched in years is asking for your data to be stolen. I also drive a 9 year old efficient sedan that I bought certified used (dealer car) that is very well maintained and will be my daily driver for at least another 5 years, so I get the mentality. However, there are practical reasons to not keep your phone too long.

I always get the latest technology, just so I can keep it twice as long! But I never finance cell phones (even at 0% for 24 months), because it balloons my monthly budget.

Tech channels have confirmed that Apple does slow down their devices as they age to keep the battery life similar long term. Technically just replacing the batter will fix this xD

Just make sure your device is still eligible for security updates.

The thing with iPhones now is, most cell service providers offer $1000 off when you upgrade, so if you upgrade every other year, you only have to pay taxes (bout $80). Which is significantly cheaper than waiting five of six years and dropping 800 bucks on a new phone. This way you’re also still able to have the nice new phone 👍🏻

Planned obsolescence!! I do not care to update to the newest and best. I will be okay. It’s all okay.

Rachel - reach out to that person using an iPhone 5s and gift them a $100 refurbished version of iPhone 10.
“Working condition” of old tech should encompass an operating system that receives security updates. I would not advise you to ‘love it for them’ to use outdated and unsupported software. Would you sign into your apps on an insecure device with a permanent internet connection?
But I agree! Frugal people don’t need to spend $1300 on a new phone when the 2-3 older versions work fine. But you still have to upgrade phone models every 3-5 years to be compliant. Just lag behind the wave. So like $5 a month budget to phone replacement fund!

I wont upgrade my phone til the iOS update don’t work anymore or the phone don’t work anymore. I’ll keep a for 3.5-5 yrs

I have a iPhone 11 and I’m ready to get a frikin flip phone, it’s becoming outdated for some apps already, and the software update caused my Siri not to work or text ringtone. Bout ready to throw it out a window. (And I’m 17 years old)

I willsau when I i need a new laptop, which I'll only get when last one doesnt work/obsolete (i work in tech) I'll get the highest spec in terms of memory. I get 10 years out of them.

I dont think its frugal to get the latest tech, but when upgrading i would not skimp.

I’ve had bad luck in the past purchasing refurbished electronics. I will keep my “old” phone/laptop, etc. until I have no choice but to upgrade. Then I will get the brand new one instead of buying refurbished that won’t last as long and need to replace it multiple times which cost more in the long run.
