How many gaps between the new boards did you end up with? I had new solid Hickory installed and the installer used roof shingles to level the floor. Is this the right way to level my flooring because I have gaps between the boards. H also started laying my flooring in the middle of the room so now there are short pieces in a roll where he started the next run. Thanks

to many stair steps. we lay out random as hell but with different size starter boards.

Too many nails - they don’t need to be every few inches.
