How To Reverse Heart Disease By Saving Your Endothelial Cells | Mastering Diabetes

How to understand cholesterol numbers. For starters, Dr. Caldwell B. Esselstyn wants to save you from a lot of anxiety. For him, it's best to focus on low fat, whole, plant-based nutrition so don't have to worry about how to read your cholesterol numbers, your cholesterol values going too low, and worry about measuring your LDL particle size.

When asked about HDL (good), LDL (bad) cholesterol, triglycerides, and understanding the numbers, Dr. Caldwell rather presents anecdotes that prove how common heart attacks are as a cause of death in the U.S. and beyond to deliver his point. What's more, he argues that evidence of heart disease is not always obvious. And he has proof.

Check out the conversation for the rest of the nitty-gritty.

SIDENOTE: Here's why Dr. Caldwell wants you to go oil-free with your diet and go big on plant-based. Oil, dairy, and meat can damage injure the “life jackets” of our vascular health – the single layer of endothelial cells that line all of our blood vessels. The endothelial cells produce the “magical gas” called nitric oxide. Now, this "magical gas" keeps our blood vessels relaxed, prevents our white blood cells and platelets from becoming sticky, and prevents the dreaded “hardening of the arteries".

Caldwell B. Esselstyn, Jr., received his B.A. from Yale University and his M.D. from Western Reserve University. In 1956, pulling the No. 6 oar as a member of the victorious United States rowing team, he was awarded a gold medal at the Olympic Games. He was trained as a surgeon at the Cleveland Clinic and at St. George’s Hospital in London. In 1968, as an Army surgeon in Vietnam, he was awarded the Bronze Star.

Question: Is the problem with animal product just the saturated fat and high calories? I ask because I am curious about chicken and beef broth from the store: It is very low calorie. It can be low sodium. It is low and almost no fat. But it is made from chicken or beef. Is this unhealthy. (I understand the animal cruelty thing, but I am asking purely from a health stand point: What is unhealthy with stock?)

Not all WFPB eaters and some SAD eaters have elevated cholesterol. I agree with Dr. E that we need to concentrate on the food and not lab numbers.

Good Morning and Happy Groundhog Day! (Not happening here in CT). My question is that I am Pre-Diabetic. I learned that having my Coffee with Creme (Whipping) was best vs Milk or Half and Half; however, it seems to me that this would spike cholestral? Also, told that Cottage Cheese with Fruit is best vs. the fruit itself; and, yet, again would the Cottage Cheese not spike cholestral? Anyway, I am athletic usually jogging, cycling, blading AND with the hope that exercise would counter cholestral issues....? Thank You for any insight!

Hey guys, Is there a certain number of grams of fat that you should get minimum? I have been doing the WFPB, low fat and think I cured myself from insulin resistance as wasn't able to eat fruit and starch before and now I can... but... I recently found I was getting a 'heavy brain', brain fog and malaise/depression feeling that was getting worse and worse. I added some fat/fish back into my diet out of fear and it lifted. I want to go back to eating WFPB, but am afraid the brain fog will come back... what could be the issue here.
