SHOTGUN 101: How to Safely Load and Unload a Pump-Action Shotgun

Today we will cover how to safely load and unload your pump-action shotgun. We will demonstrate using a Mossberg M590-A1 12ga, but the process is essentially the same for most common pump shotguns.

SAFETY FIRST
1. Treat every gun as if it were loaded.
2. Keep the gun pointed in a safe direction at all times.
3. Do not point a gun at anything you are not willing to destroy.
4. Keep your finger off the trigger until you are on target and ready to fire.
5. Always positively identify your target before firing.
6. Be aware of what is in front, behind, and to the sides of your target.
7. Use a holster when carrying a “loaded” handgun.
8. Keep firearms out of the reach of small children.
9. Always use the correct ammunition for your gun.
10. Always wear eye and ear protection at the range.

Does that model not have the shell release on the bootom where you load it?

This seems much safer than other things I’ve seen: empty the tube by hand while there’s a live round in the chamber or worse, cycle all the rounds through the chamber.

When U spoke of the action release, I wish U explained how to keep it cruiser ready. As a newbie I was going to have that feature removed bcuz I didn’t know how pumps worked. I thought I had to keep pressing it every time I wanted to rack it. It’s rarely explained thoroughly.

Great video. I have the same model shotgun. It is my first shotgun so this was a very helpful video. Somethings are the same as rifles, and somethings aren’t so it is helpful to see it in action. I had intended to set my 590A1 up the same way you have- white light, sling and shell sleeve. Would you mind telling me what products you are using on your shotgun?
