I asked for a salary increase. They told me they would run it by HR but it would take 4 months. A week later they hired a new person with the job description of my job. I asked for an explanation and what they would be having me do if he is doing my job. 'We will find something for you'.
Sometimes you can smell the BS a mile away but in this case it was just thrown in my face. They wanted me to train this new hire in everything I did and promised they would give me a raise in 3 to 4 months. I put in my 2 week notice.
Now I'm working for their competitor making more than i would have if they gave me the raise.

Quick tip for when asking for raises: always bring a few sheets of stapled paper with you (even if those sheets say nothing relevant) in your hand to give the appearance that you are ready to put in written resignation, you’re more likely to receive a raise if you present leverage, even if that leverage is just a few sheets of loose paper!
