Should I Dermaplane? Dr Somji Explains

Wondering what on earth dermaplaning is? Put simply, it’s just a fancy name for shaving the dead skin layer of your face. It’s a popular treatment at a lot of salons and spas, and it supposedly helps to exfoliate the skin and remove any dead skin cells, as well as any unwanted oil or excess hair from your face.

If you’d rather save some money or you’re a big fan of DIY beauty, it’s possible to dermaplane at home, too, you know. Before you get your razor out though, there are a few things you ought to know about this technique first.

It’s good in the sense that most people’s skin is instantly glowing and smooth after a dermaplaning session. It can also help even out skin without having to rely on chemical exfoliants that can be aggravating.

Dermaplaning is something most of us can have done, even if you have sensitive or chronically dry skin and want to get rid of dead skin cells without irritating your skin any further. What’s more, fresh, dermaplane skin is more effective at absorbing products, is great for flawless makeup application and helps skin cells regenerate faster, which helps stimulate collagen production.

I am a microbiology graduate. We used to shave the skin to induce bacterial infections to study the sensitive antibiotics... When you bruise the skin like this it is prone to get infected

Make sure you use a very strong sunscreen and reapply often because that baby skin underneath will be even more sensitive to the sun.

I love how no one ever talks about that if you have conditions like PCOS that dermaplaning is NOT the best option. Everyone is different, not everything is a good idea for all people. ❤

Note
Doing this makes your skin weak against the sun and can cause
Discolouration
While doing this you also push skin cells over a pore so this might seal the pore off and therefore make it optional for a breakout oil buildup inside of the pores leading to irration inflammation and many more things

Lol the upper lip is the ONLY area where I use this, and that's exactly where he said I shouldn't. 🤣

I do this once a month. It makes my skin look absolutely glorious. Younger, smoother, glowy and youthful. I rarely have any breakouts too! So overall I am glad I started this and I probably won’t stop.

I’ve been shaving for about 15 years, I do it between my laser hair removal treatments on my face too, and I have zero problems, no acne or dry patches or anything 😂 never had an infection or irritation either, smooth as butter! so to all the people commenting against it: I’m glad you’ve never had problems with facial hair, now stop putting unnecessary fear into those of us who have hair problems and want to stop feeling self conscious 👌not cool!

It will also cause your face to become hotter and colder. The fine hairs act as a cooling (from sweat beads and air blowing) and heating (from providing a “covering”). Unless those hairs are absolutely unsightly, it’s better that you don’t remove them. They actually have a purpose.

If you have any texture/acne scarring then DON'T DO THIS! Those baby hairs really deflect the light and "blur" the skin texture... I shaved once and EVERY PORE AND BUMP was 10 times more noticeable. I couldn't WAIT for those baby hairs to grow back!

From the mayo clinic: No — shaving hair doesn't change its thickness, color or rate of growth. Shaving facial or body hair gives the hair a blunt tip. The tip might feel coarse or "stubbly" for a time as it grows out. During this phase, the hair might be more noticeable and perhaps appear darker or thicker.

Thank you! I hate whenever people say that shaving/doing this won't cause the hair to grow thicker. It absolutely will!

Reminder that you don't need this at all, but if you do it, do it properly.

Makeup artist of 17 years here. YOU DO NOT NEED TO DO THIS. Those tiny hairs serve a purpose and protect your face. Tiktok has yall out here doing the most unnecessary things 😂

I just use my razor in the shower once a week, usually Friday morning before I go run errands and get groceries etc, because I don’t wear makeup for that.

I used to use the derma blades like the model in this video, but they irritated my skin and made it break out sometimes.

Doing it with my razor in the shower makes my skin absolutely GLOW. No issues whatsoever!

Ive been doing this for years and it makes you camera ready lol... makes the skin clean looking, younger, and gives it a natural glow.

There is a reason you have facial hair. Don't just focus on light skin. These small and almost invisible hairs protect your skin.
