Miter Saw Basics

Brought to you by Skil. The miter saw is a great tool for all types of at home projects. The four basic cuts are a crosscut which is a straight cut across the grain of the board, a miter cut which is a cut that is angled across the width of the board. The third is a beveled cut which cuts into the thickness of the wood, and finally a compound cut that combines miter and beveled cuts. To adjust the angles of the saw you will need to adjust some levers. The miter angle can by adjusted by using the knob and lever at the front which allows you to swing the cutting head and table side to side.

Cross Cut
Adjust the miter angle and bevel to 0. Align the board and make the cut.

Miter Cuts
These cuts are great for frames for doors and windows. Adjust the miter angle to 45 degrees. Cut at 45 degrees.

Bevel Cut
This is an angled cut where the bevel is set at 45 degrees.

Compound Cut
Set the miter to 31.6 degrees and bevel to 33.9 degrees to get this cut.

I really like how the miter saw has a lot of versatility with its ability to make cross cuts, any angle mitre cuts, bevel cuts, and compound cuts which is a combo of the bevel and miter cut. Its accuracy is also very good and with the miter saw you can make any assortment of projects and crafts.

nice video and presentation. I was hoping you would actually demonstrate how the 2 pieces of crown molding for example, seamlessly join.

Why is it important to let the blade to a complete stop before you pull it back up? Thank you for the video. Great job.

Thank you for explaining all the cuts in such clear details! But may I ask why you wear additional eye protection over your glasses while omitting hearing protection? :-)

Dont forget to always clamp/secure the wood you are cutting!! Also make sure there are no large wood scraps behind the blade that it can hit.. i had an almost bad experience with that when the blade hit it and it flew into the air very fast

It would have been nice to see the two pieces matched together for the particular fit

Thank you for showing how to use the miter saw on 4 different cuts, step by step.  It makes much easier for someone novice like myself.  I just mounted my compound miter saw on its stand but CAN NOT lift up the SAW actually start cutting.  Is there a knob locked? this miter saw came in a box saw down between the groove but it won't lift up... I looked at manual and there is no instruction how to lift up the saw to begin any project.  If you can help me with I would greatly appreciated.
