How to Use a Miter Saw - Shop Class Basics

Always wear eye and ear protection and secure any loose clothing, jewelry and long hair. Keep hands 6 inches from the blade and off the turntable. Do not cross your arms as you cut. Support your work piece with a feed support or stand.

Before powering up, bring the blade down to ensure you are still on your mark. Bring the blade up to the top position, power it up and bring it back down, into the wood. If you're using a sliding miter saw, you always want the sliding motion to be in toward the fence.

That IS a nice saw.  One thing missing: it looks like he is cutting a pressure-treated deck board. One should always wear respiratory protection like a dust mask when cutting any "treated" wood.

I love it when you talk about the hair, no pun intended though, because I'm sporting a long hair nowadays and your advice is just spot on. Thanks...

Also always remember to have your wood flush with the fence! I made the mistake of pushing my wood into the fence too far to the left, and the wood was not totally flush with the fence, so there was a little kickback. That can be scary, so be careful!

Hey guy, have you got a video on your Kobalt 7 1/4 inch sliding compound  miter saw (Model # SM1850LW). I just bought my first one and could use Lowe's expertise to teach me the basics. Thanks in advance

You didn't show me how to release the saw. Mine's in the locked down position and I can't get it up!

I liked your video, Where is the safety located. Or the lock down. I need to release the blade...

If you have a sliding miter saw, does it mater if you "chop" down to make a cut, or should you use the slide and slide thru the piece your cutting ?

Don't put your 2x4 or 2x6 so it is sitting on the 2x side - always cut it so it has a nice wide base to rest against the fence.

I'm having a hard time finding a video that shows HOW to tilt the blade at an angle like that. Shouldn't there be a mechanism that loosens the blade to allow it to tilt, and the re-tighten to keep it at that angle? Normally it stays straight up and down, so I thought this video would show us how to enable this tilting option. But this guy just reaches over and the blade tilts easily. Seems unsafe that it can do that without some prior maneuvering of the settings.

A little too brief and do not make assumptions, assume all the audience are idiots...
I wanted to know more about cutting bevels... especially if you have a saw that only cuts on one side, as I do have cause it cost me much less money....
