South Korea does indeed PAY the US for defence. But, Trump didn't understand that NATO doesn't work that way - so he really embarrassed himself (well, his supporters) by claiming that Germany was 'in default' of its payments to the US. It was nonsense. Just as was his belief that the Paris Climate Agreement was something to do with the weather in France.
