Tube amps still have their place, but less is more sometimes. It’s very easy to get sucked into the rabbit hole of endless tone chasing if you’re not careful, to the point that you’re tone chasing more than actually getting better at the guitar…

Having a wall of amps doesn't really make sense, but don't ever sell your favorites thinking a plug in is gonna give you the same mojo you'll get running the real head thru a 4x12.

Now that I have my second tube amp, after trying to survive off of just a couple of pluggins. I can say that it is really nice to be able to pick up an amp and be able to physically touch it/feel it or even see it in a room. I was getting bored of just plopping on my desk chair and playing through my laptop. Seeing an amp lay on top of a 4 x 12 just looks sick af and at times its even inspiring. But I definitely see how it can be advantageous when you gig and know how to get the tone you want.

Totally agree. I bought a quad for a few reasons. 1. I now have a number of $5000.00 boutique amps in at my disposal.
2. Yes it’s technology but with two vamps, you gotta worry about capacitors tubes and all that fun stuff and let’s face it it’s not getting any cheaper.
3. I’m getting older now and hate lugging around lots of gear I literally grab my guitar case which holds two guitars and my paddleboard because my band has gone to an in ear system now.

I hate to say it because it’s not a nice thing to say, but tube amps are going to be away in the past and will be extremely rare to see them getting played live unless you’re a big rock band

It is scientifically proven that if a man continues to sell his tube amps his genitalia will suffer a substantial decrease in size.

I'm about there with you... I've made a $10k mistake!! 😂

I get it, man. Tone chasing is a never-ending quest. I've only ever owned 3 tube amps, and I still have all 3. One of 'em, the Silvertone 1481, was my first real amp. I bought my Mesa/Boogie DC5 used over 20 years ago, and picked up a VHT Special 6 combo about 10 years ago. I can get basically any tone I need out of those 3, thanks to my own recent tone chasing experiments with a bunch of pedals. I do use plugins occasionally, but mainly for the bass parts, scratch tracks, late night practice, demos or recording a quick idea.

I get it. I only have one guitar amp. The Orange OR15 and a 4x12. Only 5 pedals. I’m not into collecting for the sake of it. Limitations are a good thing when you just want to play.

Dude, not gonna lie, I made this mistake years ago. I'm 48 so that'll tell you a time line. I sold all my pedals when I got into processor's and tried doing the 1 amp thing. I crave more lol. So I had to rebuild a pedalboard (not cheap), and now here's food for thought, I bought a Radial JD7 Injector (check them out). It allows me to run up to 7 amps simultaneously and do re-amping. I run 5 amps currently simultaneously. There's nothing like it, the frequency spread is amazing lol. Tube and solid-state, it's a wall of speakers and amps. Something to check out. I'm actually envious of Kyle Bush has an amazing assortment of beautiful amps. Thinking of it like a painters pallet. Not to mention I think you'll miss them, it's a sentimental thing I guess, I get attached to stuff, I typically don't sell and usually end up going back to various stuff. Just my old fart opinion lol. Love your content dude!

Appreciate the shout out dude! Your stuff started as a mesa stack and is now a captured version in my kemper, which Is far more consistent between singles. Rather than hoping I miced up the cab EXACTLY the same, used the same pres at the same levels, matched eq'd it, etc. I can just pop on the initial capture I know works and tweak.
This is where high gain gear is headed and honestly I'm here for it. its always been hard to justify spending several thousand dollars on ONE head.

I got a Helix about 5 or 6 years ago and never looked back. I can track my processed tones along with DIs for reamping later for guitar and bass, and it’s been the most convenient thing ever. And at the end of the day, if it sounds good, it doesn’t matter what was used.

This is the type of video I needed right now. I’ve been thinking about thinning the herd. I have a buddy who is in the same situation as you, minus the YouTube channel and it seems to make sense these days.

Word. Its the reality of it. Been there you are now and it sucks having to go through all that money to hit that realization...but I bought a bunch of amps over the last year. I reckon you'll be back. :)

I just stopped playing shows and in bands. I can enjoy my tube amps at home every day.

I have been going the other way and have been buying more tube amps and using digital even less. I have a bunch of plugins and a Fractal FM3, but I just find myself using my tube amps 99% of the time. For me it just comes down to the simplicity of turning on a tube amp and just going. With the digital stuff I feel like I tweak more than I play. I have also been moving back into pedals and away from effects processors because of the simplicity. I am sure there is some nostalgia factor built into a lot of this as well.

Riffs Beards and Gear recently posted about downsizing his tube amp collection as well, so it’s interesting to see this trend this year. I started out my guitar journey with a line 6 helix and now building a carefully diverse and curated collection of microphones, cab speakers and tube amps that serve specific purposes in tone building. Complete with a KHE cab switcher, DI, reamping box and all that. I love my neural dsp plugins and I find them particularly useful for creating unique clean and lead tones though. Thinking of relegating my line 6 helix to FX loop duty now to get the best of both worlds. I think there is a good balance to be had with all of the awesome options we have today. It’s never been a better time to be a guitar player.

I've only been playing guitar for a few years, but I've been playing bass since I was 13 or so (39 now). With that being said I've played in bands with real amps etc. and I fully welcome AMP SIMS! I would never be able to afford a home recording back in the day. At least with the sound with good sound quality. AMP sims have made that possible for me and helped me find different tones. Thanks for this upload! 🤘🤘

I agree with some of your thoughts. I’ve been on quite the tone chasing journey myself for the last 5-6 years. I‘ve accumulated 7 tube amps and 24 guitars. I don’t think you can really evaluate something unless you get it into your own environment. Most of my stuff I ordered online because I just couldn’t find the items locally to try out. So like you, I have some stuff I need to sell. I gravitate to two amps in particular, my OG Peavey 5150 2x12 combo signature model and the 5150 III 50W Stealth, paired with an EMG 81 tuned down a whole step. I also have the JVM 205H which is killer too!
