Gold Hot Spots of Australia - Drake, New South Wales

Drake is a small rural town of around 400 people and is located 44 kilometres east of Tenterfield in northern new south wales.

In 1858 gold was discovered near Newman's Pinch, a hill on the western side of Fairfield now known as Drake. Quite a few years later copper was also mined into the vicinity.

The Australian Antimony company began mining here in 1872 with Drake as their community centre.

Between 1872 and 1890 Drake was a thriving mining and timber town with 12 hotels, a town band and many private dwellings. Plus a number of businesses including a blacksmith post office and stores.

A weekly coach run was established to run from Tenterfield to Casino in 1885.

The town also served as a stopping point for bullock teams, drivers and settlers passing between inland and coastal regions.

Prior to the second world war where the local mining industry came to a standstill over two tons of gold had been extracted from the Drake mines.

Today the areas still offer fossicker's a bit of fun whether panning or detecting and some of the old mines are still reachable.

There are also plenty of spots for hiking fishing and mountain biking.
