Chiltern is a fascinating historic town in Northeast Victoria located between Wangaratta and Wodonga, in the Shire of Indigo.

Chiltern is situated on the Black Dog Creek, and began as the Black Dog township.

The township was surveyed in 1853 and due to the resemblance to the Chiltern Hills in England, was renamed Chiltern.

It wasn’t until the gold rush in the late 1850’s that the town was established.

Alluvial gold was first discovered in 1858 in the Indigo Lead located about 3.4 km from the township.

Within 4 months of the discovery there were between 12 000 and 15 000 miners on the goldfield, this rapidly increased to over 20 000.

During the same year the nearby New Ballarat Lead was discovered.

But by 1859 the easily found gold of the Indigo Lead was worked out and the majority of alluvial miners left for other fields.

Some of the remaining miners sunk a shaft during 1859 and struck luck with the Chiltern Lead.

Finally, when the gold dwindled during the early 1900s, so did Chiltern.

Chiltern today is a peaceful township nestled in the hills of the Chiltern-Mt Pilot National Park.

It is a wonderfully preserved gold-rush era town filled with good old-fashioned hospitality and warmth.

A visit to Chiltern not only provides the experience of viewing a well-preserved gold rush town, it also offers the opportunity to try the local goldfields in the Chiltern-Mt Pilot National Park.

Be sure to check current guidelines of where you are allowed to prospect.

Chiltern, the perfect location for a weekend getaway full of historic goldfields history and the opportunity to unearth a little yellow yourself.
