I went NY Phil last night. It was great of course but, van Zweden conducting. ThisThielmanns Vienna is better. NY Phil was surprisingly small. Only 5 cellos, 5 double bass. I didn’t get that deep rumble as in this orchestra. And they played it too fast. But it’s Beethoven so it was a great privilege to experience. I will go to Vienna and hear this Philharmonic some day. But we had a great bonus, Conrad Tao played us his riff on Art Tatum’s riff on Over the Rainbow. Stunning! I cried. He was there to perform Mozart Piano Concerto 17.

i have a really mixed impression about this whole event. While Thielemann did a damn good job in his 9th, the other ones, especially the 5th had some weird tempi all over the place.
But then again, it is all just a matter of taste.
