Thank you for explaining this. I never knew why they changed it. Now I do.

I am in France, yesterday the psychologist, gave me an assessment, series of questions, reasilzed by Tony Atwood and other persons, specialized for Autism in girls.
And theses 2 last months, I answered to many questions to diagnose Asperger syndrome, specifically.
I like to use the both terms Asperger and Autism spectrum.

Aspergers is still a valid diagnosis in New Zealand, as NZ uses both DSM-IV & DSM-V

Yes thank you for giving the practical reason! I only understood it in terms of the fact that the DSM shuffles terms around. Needless to say, that didn’t qualify as an explanation to my brain.

The other thing that’s been frustrating me is the matter of the term with regard to self-identification. There is a lot of talk about whether Asperger was a “nazi” — from what I’ve read I don’t know that this is fair. And of course if I use the term in therapy, my much-younger therapist can’t help noting it’s not a thing.

But the part that makes me uncomfortable is the question of the broader autistic community. As with your channel, I often refer to myself as an Aspie because in various ways it feels right to me. But my RSD leads me to wonder if the community — which is very understanding, but does have some standards of self identification terminology, like identity first (I agree), is bothered by the use of Aspergers. What has been your experience, since you still use the term? I’d like to be able to use it, and I can deal with it tweaking some NT folks, but the notion of it bothering other ND folks is more uncomfortable.

Dan, Is DSM 5 a medical guide Used in Europe as far as your aware? I've spoke to some people from different place within Europe that told me Aspergers is still a known diagnosis in Several European countries. But I myself couldn't never find information that conclusively stated if DSM-5 is only used here in the US or if it's also a medical guide used by other mental health professionals around the world. Just a curiosity I wanted to ask and see if you had an insight on it.
