4:43 The DSM 5 & Name Change
6:48 Conclusion & Discussion

Aspergers Syndrome is named after Hans Asperger who was a German physiologist who was working on the brain function and neurological development of children who displayed a certain type of behaviour.

Back in the 1940s there was no name for this condition, but also a guy called Leo Kanner was doing the same research over in the USA.

Eventually these condition types where given names such as, Kanner Syndrome, and Early Infantile Autism.

It wasn’t until after the death of Hans Asperger in the 1980s that they condition outlined in his work was called Asperger’s Syndrome.

This diagnostic nomenclature was a staple diagnostic method right up until 2013 when the DSM 5 (diagnostic standard criteria document) decided to remove the term and move the condition into just Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Ever since this transition it has caused a lot of confusion over the use of the term Asperger’s syndrome.

I talk more about it in detail in my video (link in bio)

As an Aspie, I say yes. Aspergers exist.

My son was classified as having Aspergers when he was 6-7, so 2005-06 ish. The DSM changed the classification of it when he was in high school. That actually helped us being that it was under the "umbrella" of autism, because his issues weren't picking and choosing anymore, it was under one spectrum.
That said, all those years before that, he was just clawing his way into IEP's because his academics weren't "bad enough", because for the most part, he was functioning, but struggling in certain areas, and teachers thought of him as lazy *sigh*

Anyway, he's 21 now, and I wish I had him in some kind of job program in high school, because he won't be able to get/hold a job without at least starting out with some kind of job coach.

Yes it does. I have it. And I consider it an asset.

When I was diagnosed the clinician said I had ASD or Aspergers, it’s the same thing. I then bought a T-shirt with the slogan Kiss My Aspergers on it I thought it was cool 🤓

As someone identified as an Aspie I tend to see it as a part of the autism spectrum. (I’m not going to use the word diagnose because autism is not a disease. I say identify) Of course one can still call it Aspergers, I’ll know what they’re talking about. But at this point, it seems as if the term is becoming outdated.

Some people I talked to don’t like the name Asperger anyway. And I remember you explained why in this video. One friend in particular wanted the name changed because it compared to schools named after confederates and many Americans see that as racist. And it’s like that with what my friend said about Hans: that he was a nazi ableist.

Yeah I didn’t get the support I needed either from DARS because I was ‘not autistic enough.’ Very shameful of them.

Anyway thanks for the video Dan.

Just like gender, I don't mind what others decided to reference me as, I can tell them all day that I don't mind, but that seems to be just as weird to them as everything else I say 😂 so many people have shame connected to the word "autism" but for me, there's no shame in being put into the same category as the beautiful souls that are built strong enough to deal with the challenges that every human does, on top of the extra we're given. High or low "functioning" I see no shame in being a part of a group of frigging warriors, and pure souls, trying to navigate a life full of people that will never accept you for who you are. Even if just in spirit we gotta stick together and say there's no shame in whatever label they want to give us because our differences make THEM uncomfortable. Awesome vid, man 💜

Thanks for your videos Dan. I have officially been diagnosed yesterday at age 44 with the assessment results stating that I have ASD. Now I need to figure what each range means, like deficit, below and so on.

My 19yr old was diagnosed with Aspergers, an Autism Spectrum Disorder, at 8yrs old. After having identified him in this way for a few years, it felt wrong to then just say he has autism. Part of that was a formed identity but I realized that I had some subconscious bias towards people who were high functioning and used the label of Aspergers to separate my child from 'those' kids. It took some personal growth for me to get out of that head space. Then came along my youngest, born in 2013. I knew almost immediately that he would be on the spectrum and was diagnosed at 5 with severe adhd and ASD 1. I used to say 'high functioning' to others as a way of clarifying abilities and realized that was just a remnant of my bias.
I like phrasing you used to describe it as needing less services. Even so, my youngest would appear as though were 'high functioning' on the surface and actually needs a great deal of services due to behaviors. My kids have forced me to grow and evolve in how I think about functioning and ability and the value of all humans.

The British Psychological Society (BPS) published a mostly critical response in which it attacked the whole concept of the DSM-5. With links and potential conflict of interests between the pharmaceutical industry and the DSM-5 taskforce (the group that revised the manual) are a matter of record. The first version had homosexuality listed as a "sociopathic personality disorder" and remained so until 1973. Autistic spectrum disorders were also thought to be a type of childhood schizophrenia. The DSM has also refused to list Complex PTSD as a condition mainly because of the hard pharmaceutical industry influence, because professionals call for CPTSD to be treated with therapy not drugs, and that means they lose money. Personally, I don't think professionals in the UK should follow the DSM because of their Big Pharma links.

Thanks for explaining, Dan, you are very helpful. I have always used the term "Aspergers" to describe myself, but I think more and more we will all be using the term "Autism, " as "Aspergers" fades into the distance with time.

Thanks for explaining this. My grandson has diagnosis of autism but he appears to be high functioning with a lot of complex needs which result in behavioural issues plus has processing difficulties. Tends to display as PDA in a lot of ways but this isn’t recognised where we live and there is no support or help for his needs. Such a battle for many parents in the same situation

In 1968 my first grade teacher told me that I had "Edison Syndrome" making the analogy that when Thomas Edison was a student the other students didn't understand him because he was way ahead of them-thinking on a level that other students couldn't reach. She also tested me and found that I read on an 8th grade level.
Fast forward 32 years. My therapist diagnosed me with both asperger's and hyperlexia as my sense of smell and taste are quite delicate.
