Owning a Great Pyrenees is like having a polar bear in your house! 🐕 Look at all that fur! We brushed this beautiful dog just two days ago, and it looks like a whole new coat is coming off. If you're considering getting a Great Pyrenees, be prepared for some serious grooming work. Find out more tips on dog training and care with American Standard Dog Training.

Thank you for making people aware of that. So many people buy dogs just because they like the way they look but have no idea how important proper brushing is. I have worked as a dog groomer before and I've seen dogs that were so horribly matted, they had already developed skin issues or even had trouble moving properly. The worst I've seen was a newfouldland dog that was never brushed at all by his owner and she let him swim in a river every day. There was no way the dog could dry all the way down to the skin and all the algae and bacteria from the water had a perfect breeding ground in the wet matted fur. The skin was in such a bad condition, that it actually tore apart one day, when I tried to comb one of the legs. My boss then sent her away and said this was now a matter for the vet. We had told her so so many times, that she needed to brush and comb her dog properly but she just wouldn't listen. It really broke my heart to see the dog in that condition 😢

World's happiest birds live in that yard! Softest, prettiest nests!

Yeah, my family has 3. Twice a year they shed like crazy! You have to brush them multiple times a week. Not beginner friendly dogs, they are a stubborn breed and eat a lot, have incredible prey drive, bark at everything and, have so much power. But they will protect through anything. My own dog Willow Almost killed an aggressive dog that lunged at me. They are the most loving dogs if you socialize them.

I have had two Great Pyrenees, currently still have my female as my male died of cancer last year. I love this breed. They are amazing family protectors. The hair is no joke.

I've owned 3 and as a professional groomer that is NOT daily or two days ago. Can tell by the fur on his leg. it took me 3+ hours to do a bath and full groom on each dog. That given, it is TOTALLY worth it!!!

Turn this fur to wool. It will be a very warm winter coat.

Yes, this looks like it's blowing coat (the twice a year MAJOR shed). I knew someone who had 2 Pyrs & the daily/weekly maintenance was nothing like this.

We once had a German Shepherd/Lab/Chow? mix who was double coated. Took the dog to a pet groomer. By the time the groomer was done the whole shop floor was covered with a two to three inch layer of dog wool!

Yup, that fur is real! They are worth it.

Excessive brushing. Owned 4 and that looks like they are completely shaving the coat, which never shave or aggressively brush a double layered coat as it actually keeps them cool in the summer. Need to use a dog hair blower instead. 🙏

Best dog I ever had was a Pyrenees I was given by a family that was supposed to just be taking care of her for a bit but the owner never came back. Like 2 yrs later, the dog is outside on a chain and can't come inside because the whole family is allergic. I was told she was a Collie and when we pulled up polar bear is the exact thing that came to mind. Even her name was Lilly Bear. I said, "THAT is NOT a Collie." She was massive, even more so because she was covered in mats. She stood intimidating, elbows out, staring us down. I'll admit to being a bit scared when I first saw her. I asked how we would get her in the car. The lady said she loved to go for a ride.
She let her off the chain when we opened the car door and she hopped right in.
From that moment on, that was my baby girl.
I was a teenager. My mom got me shears so I could get the mats off her. It took me hours of careful work which she laid still for like a champ. I left a mane and a long tail mostly and the rest I had to shave off. She shrank by 2/3.
I had her trained to hand signals. She was a lap dog. 😂 She would lay on me on the sofa and completely cover me. She knew how to back up without turning around which was so useful with a big dog in a small house. Smart as a whip and so loving. Always glued to my leg. I would sing to her "Lilly Bear, lots of hair!" ❤ I miss that dog so much.

Helping mine shed out now. Sitting on the porch in the morning, sipping my coffee, combing my GP. Done daily this takes about a week. It's good for him too as it doesn't take forever in a day and he appreciates the break in-between.

I have 2 Cane Corso/Great Pyrenees dogs and they have medium length fur....that NEVER stops falling out in clumps, Tufts, strands. It's always in your food, on your clothes, your bedding, and all over everything else lol. I brush them every morning and easily get 5 wads of hair from spring until winter 😂😂

Thanks for bringing that to our attention. I’m lucky having a boxer with low low hair to skin. Barely if any. ☺️🐾✨

I have a pyrenees who likes to roll on the grass and get all the spiky things in its coat. Have to brush him everyday, sometimes twice or even three times a day.
