Viral TikToker and Exvangelical Kristi Burke has been reading Bart Ehrman. Here's my response. Jesus did claim to be God.

I’m giving her a challenge. I’d like to see her go to the Middle East and proclaim many of the titles and saying that Jesus spoke about Himself and see how long you live due to proclaiming to be God.

When Bart claimed that Jesus was confused and panicked when hanging on the cross, now knowing why they hanged him, I lost what little respect I had left for Erhman as a scholar.
Because Jesus time and time again told his disciples that he would be crucified. So either Erhman was ignorant of that, or he was disingenuous

It's probably worth mentioning that Bart has sort of backed down from this claim in recent times. In his debate with Peter Williams he agreed with Williams that all four Gospels portrayed Jesus as God. Weirdly enough, I don't think he's ever outright acknowledged that he was wrong or that his views have developed since writing How Jesus Became God as he did with the handwashing stuff in Mark.

“The Son of Man” title, frequently used by Jesus in referring to himself, had HUGE implications in first-century Judaism. In their world, “son of man” was more significant than “son of god, ” as most Roman emperors called themselves by such a title.
