1100+ HP Tesla Model S Plaid and 2021 refreshed design

After a few days of letting it sink in, I thought I'd share my thoughts on the refreshed design of the Model S. In this video I'm doing exactly that and tell you the thing I like and the thing I don't like. And at the end I'll tell you what I'm going to do with my current reservation for the Plaid+: keep it of cancel...

Fair comments. I have ordered the new LR but we are just 2 people and can understand your comments about the space for 5 people. As driving now with an S since the middle od December and before with a 3 since March 2019, i definitely hate the 5 stalks at the S. The 3 had 2 stalks and was perfect. That said no stalks at all looks also ok to me.
I can't wait to have a seat in it or test drive it.
PS: Steven did something no other vloggers did so far which is comparing the size of both versions by showing a layover. Thanks for that!

Bedankt voor de erg efficiënte samenvatting!!

ANC only generally filters constant noise, e.g. the white/pink noise you get from the road, sirens, horns etc. should come through fine as they are not 100% constant/continuous.

Active noise canceling - For a while in 2009. I had a Honda Legend as my company car and it was equipped with active noise canceling. Works the same way as described here, canceling out low frequency noise by playing the opposite wave form through the Bose sound system (mainly woofer if my memory serves me well). So, good for exhaust and road noise. This system was helped by an acoustic windscreen, but it could never cancel out sirens, railroad crossing or any other warning sounds.

The steering wheel and related questions - Maybe this is a turning of generations sort of thing. Young people coming up with new technologies and designs for young people. They never had to deal with all the mechanical complexities that we and our parents had to deal with when driving. Smart variable steering ratios, smart indicators, smart driving direction selector... no need ever to get your hands dirty. Once upon a time, I would assume it was easier to drive a horse carriage than to operate all the levers and switches on one of those first automobiles, right?

Besides, <800 km WLTP range of the Plaid+ is even more tempting. 😉

My understanding, atleast on noise cancelling headphones, is the anti noise works on constant steady noise--things like tire and wind noise. On the other hand, other "irregular" and non constant sounds like people talking, honking of other drivers, and ems sirens wouldnt be "silenced" and will in effect be "enhanced" because the background noise will be reduced. It reminds me of how my dad could hear my teeth banging together when I'm chewing even though he's actually partially hearing impaired. It's because he is only "impaired" from hearing certain pitches so the other pitches are in effect "enhanced".... In a setting like a car though where you have multiple occupants at different areas in a given space, it'll be interesting how they'll do it.

Great analysis! That would be a real bummer if the middle back seat was indeed crippled. I’m also in need of three proper seats in the back. Thanks for pointing this out.

active noise cancellation should actually be fine. From my experience with my headset, it only really works well with continuous background noise, and sound that changes all the time can't be cancelled as efficiently.

Just remember that they are measuring the times with a rollout. So you can add 0.2-0.3s to the numbers to get a real 0-100km/h from standstill

I'll keep my reservation too. Will probably get the normal steering wheel, though. But I'm already thinking of cancelling my MYP reservation, because the S almost got as good as I hoped it would get. The one thing I hate is the carbon look coming with plaid. Plaid plus it will be with 19 inch stealth wheels - to compete with roadrunr :-)

nice video Steven you summarize my thoughts as welll really hoping for other brands to come with good electric sedans, as for the weight reduction couldn't they use the tech of Y, with much less wiring ? would also give quite some weight reduction i guess. Groetjes Philippe

Steven do you think 6 piston calipers will be standard for all Model S cars and the Plaid Models coming with carbon ceramic rotors? Also on the Tesla website they talk about Carbon-sleeved rotors, are they referring to the rotor disc?

Thanks for the video Steven. As always, an excellent analysis. Even the new Model X is looking awesome, the decision for me is really easy: My Model X is only 2 years old, so no new car for me. 😀
With the new Model S and X Tesla showed once again, who is the current leader in the car industry. Honestly, I can't wait to see the test results when these cars are out and I'm sure it will also have an positive effect on the share price.

I've read somewhere that there will be a gear selector button next to the hazard light button on the console (in case the MCU fails). Not sure if that's true, but I would prefer a dedicated gear selector on the yoke itself. Your render of the center screen and dash looks good in 2d, but I think it would look weird irl as the screen is floating in front of the dash (and tilting left-right wouldn't be possible). Otherwise great analysis; like your video's a lot!

Those Tesla Owners WorldWide are mean. I agree mostly with what you said. keep up the good work.

Great summarize! Except for the steering wheel im very impressed. Do you think that by the end of 22, they would upgrade the long range with the 4680 battery?

Love your render of the screen being properly integrated. Hope Elon sees it.

Hi Steven, from my perspective the yoke and absence of stalks and shifter is a complete no go (from my own experience I'm very far from trusting the autopilot), I wish Tesla would make this part an option. So I think this is because in Tesla's mind the car is supposed to be completely in autonomous mode most of the time, reason why you can remove all those things. But then, why make a car which would be so fun to drive, because I'm pretty sure the autopilot will never ever make 0-60 (or 0-100) for you all the time, if you see what I mean. IMHO autopilot and fun driving are completely opposite, so I cannot justify these choices. I don't have a big family like you so I don't really mind about the 5th place, but I totally agree with your idea about it. So for me, it's a big no for the new Model S. And I the end, unless I win at the Euromillions, I will never have the budget to buy a car like that. So, I don't care. And if I win, I'd rather have a Model Y for the practicality and a roadster for the fun.

Did you know you are supposed to hit the blinker before you turn?
