Morrowind and Oblivion guards: paid per criminal apprehended, dead or alive
Skyrim guards: paid by the hour

i've never actually gone to jail in skyrim. It's too easy not to. It's not like Oblivion where the guards put on blinding boots of speed to catch you at the speed of light.

This has just convinced me to be a law-abiding citizen in Skyrim.

Breaking out in Oblivion: get through this Very Hard lock with 1 lockpick to escape
Breaking out in Skyrim: please use this obvious escape route to escape

In Daggerfall, The guards beat me to death, brought my body to court on charges of VAGRANCY, told my body to make it's defense, then decided the silence meant it should go to prison for longer, dumped my body out into the street after the sentence was done, and then I got the Game Over cutscene for perishing. Daggerfall justice system is a perfect model of fairness... HALT! HALT! HALT!

They should have added a Prison Faction and better yielding & surrendering mechanics for bandits so if you ever go to prison you can meet all the people you turned in for bounties.

I got sentenced to 20 years in prison in daggerfall one time and as a result once I got out of prison I had instantly failed the main quest. And my sentence would have been longer if I had not lied my way through Court.

I still remember my first time going to jail in Bruma. I immediately beat my cell mate to death, missing a quest I had no idea was there

If I remember correctly there was even a glitch in vanilla Morrowind where you could make money off of going to jail. You would drop your money in a Tavern in balmorra and the guard would arrest you. Then when you were released all your money would be back plus what you picked back up.

As a conjurer I just keep throwing angry atronochs until they open the door to kill me only to see me materialize a sword in my hands. Good times

So I completed the Thieves Guildmaster quest in my last playthrough. This naturally meant I've dealt with most shops in the Holds that actually matter.
I hit a guard in Whiterun, just to see what would happen, and the people whose businesses I invested in, did quests for, and were allied with me all mobbed the guards. I ended up bribing a guard with 4.5k gold to be let off, thanks to the Guild option.
Skyrim's criminal system is just like real life.

*Oblivion:*
*Accidentally picks up sweet roll*
Guard: "Stop! You have violated the law! Pay the court a fine or serve your sentence! You're stolen goods are now forfeit, vandal!"
Player: *Fails to reason with guard*
"Then pay with your blood!"
*Skyrim:*
Guard: "Let me guess. Someone stole your sweetroll."

Never went to prison in any of the games thankfully. One of the best reasons to join the Thieves guild every play through even if I'm not planning on doing the quest line that time. I work to hard for all my stolen stuff to get it confiscated.
