Why peregrine falcons are the fastest animals on earth

Cheetahs are fast, but not faster than a diving peregrine falcon.

This video features a clip courtesy of Human Planet, a BBC, Discovery Channel and France Television Co-Production.

Peregrine falcons are the fastest animals of the land—and it's no wonder, their bodies are built for speed. While cheetahs can run up to 70 mph on land, peregrine falcons can dive at speed of over 200 mph. That's faster than a 100 mph sneeze and around the same speed as a Formula One racing car. Peregrines are light in weight, aerodynamically shaped, and have robust respiritary systems; all of which allows them to be the fastest birds of prey, and animals in general. Peregrine falcon numbers took a massive hit during much of the 20th century in North America. They became nearly extinct because of pesticides, specifically DDT. The chemical made the falcon's—and many other birds — eggshells thinner, preventing the embryos from developing, in addition to poisoning adult falcons. In 1972, DDT was banned and recovery efforts for peregrine falcons began soon after. By 1999, with concerted effort peregrine falcons saw their numbers increase dramatically and were removed the Endangered Species list.

As soon as she mentioned the speed, I knew american football field was coming up in a matter of seconds. And then BAM!! 😂😂

This was such a fascinating video guys. Thanks for linking to our Falcon vs Car stunt film!

To those discounting the dive speed as just gravity, I would point out that the terminal velocity of that cheetah falling off a cliff still wouldn't come close to the falcon's top speed.

why does this have so many dislikes,
shes literally just talking about a bird

Diving is the falcon using gravity to increase its own speed - the bird itself is not reaching that speed through its own movement. Cheetahs, on the other hand, reach their top speed through muscle movement alone. As such I would argue that Cheetah speed > Peregrine Falcon speed.

If a _human_ goes sky diving they'll reach a pretty significant speed too, but you wouldn't consider a human one of the fastest animals, would you?

"Peregrine doesnt count because its assisted by gravity" is like saying "Cheetahs dont count because they use friction"

Well, if outside forces like gravity come to play, moths and small insects caught in tornadoes are the fastest animals on Earth.

Humans are obviously the fastest animals on Earth, whose fastest speed clocked in at 24, 791 mi/h (11 km/s) by the Apollo 10 crew upon atmospheric reentry. A little non-human bias, maybe?

"The world's fastest land animal relative to its size is Paratarsotomus macropalpis, a sesame-seed-sized mite native to southern California. Scientists recently clocked one traveling 322 body lengths per second, which, to scale, would be like a person running 1, 300 miles per hour." So much for bias against insects.

To people saying the falcon isn't the fastest animal in the world because it uses gravity to go fast:
Peregrine falcon horizontal speed- 71mph
Cheetah land speed- 62mph

They are the fastest. Thats it. I've seen some comparisons in the comment section that are very moronic "if a cheetah falls downs a cliff". That is not a valid comparison. We are talking about a animal that uses gravity and aerodynamics as a means to achieve speed. Also, saying that we should consider humans cause we can use plane, its not valid, cause planes are built, ergo, they we are not fast, its the plane. Or when a plane is going at the speed of sound we say " that human is going at the speed of sound" or "the plane is going at the speed of sound"?

The comparison between an animal that dives and one that runs along the ground is a bit unfair. A human can travel around 120mph when diving from a plane, doesn't mean we're faster than a cheetah.

to be fair though, the peregrine falcon is not the fastest animal ON earth.

"That wasn't flying, that was falling with style"

If your throw a cheetah off a bridge it flies just as fast.

The title should be "Fastest speed possible by an animal".

The only time the word 'incorrectly' isn't spelled incorrectly is when it's spelled incorrectly.

if you get a cheetah when searching for fastest animal, your google might be drunk, because i got peregrine falcon...

Cheetah: I am the fastest animal in the world
Peregrine: I'm about to end this guy's whole career

Incorrect. Sonic the hedgehog is the fastest animal on earth.
