Absolutely agree with you on this topic, I recently graduated from uni (End of December 2018) with a degree in physics, I have had 8 months experience working with testing automation and looking to get more into software dev. I have several active github projects and 5+ hackathon projects, and I recently had several interviews for a senior level software development job at startups that wanted 2-5 years experience.

Always apply to roles that interest you, whether it be, AI (be warned, they typically want MS/PhD as a deal breaker) software, hardware, etc.and remember the worst thing they can do is reject you, which is a part of life anyways. Best of luck to anyone who reads this post.

I recently got my first developer role as a Jr. Developer in a corporation. Within the first week of hire, I've noticed that a lot of developers kept to themselves and distant themselves from creating relationships with other developers. I can see there isn't a close-knit community and whenever I try to ask questions, they were dismissive with me. Would you be able to make a video and talk more about your experience working with other developers in a corporation environment and how you handle building relationships with them?

Ye exactly as you say. I have even more funny story. I took about 20 hours long course on Udemy 3 months after school because I was just so bored with rejections on internship/jr level ( java, c# ) so I wanted to experience something new. After that course done ( 5 days ) I just wrote it for fun into my CV because I thought nobody cares about a 20h course anyway so I just wanted to fill a blank space ...and you guess it right, I got a call next week from the company where I applied for Java internship that Java is currently crowded with so many newbs applying there but they got one free spot in Angular team for jr dev... I made sure to let them know that I know almost nothing after 20h but they said that's not a problem we gonna teach you all necessary so I took the job with my proud 20h of experiences and 11.99eur spent for education. Moral of the story? Fak java/c# it's crowded.

This is how I got started. I never had a junior job. And I somehow became a front end lead within my first year of being a react developer. So glad it worked out.

I apply to Internships/Jr Dev/Entry level. The only way to get your first job is spray and pray, at least that's my strategy.

Sent applications to several jobs that require years of front-end dev experience (which I have only a few months) yet got an interview invitation within 12 hours. This is really helpful. Now I hope the interview will go well!

You're videos helped me so much with finding a job. I am now a junior web developer (It's my first job in this field) and I am very happy at my new job. I took your advice from your resume videos, worked on a couple of projects during my winter break, posted them on github and then managed to get a job within a month of applying. I think that showing my eagerness to learn and to start my own projects helped me out greatly in my cover letters too. I also want to thank you for giving me hope with finding a job. This is a career change for me and the last two years have been tough. After my fall semester I was scared about not being able to find one and feeling like I don't have what it takes to be in this field despite doing well in school and enjoying my programming classes. I'm glad that I came across your channel.

I used to be a mech engineer like you, but then I took programming to the knee

I agree with everything you said about "not limiting yourself." Being over-confident it always better than not being confident when it comes to applying for a job because you don't know what you are going to get. The good thing about unpaid internship/practicum is that you can get your feet wet by working at the company for free in return as a volunteer. I would not say do not do it but do it for a short period of time which might result in an employment if the company likes you.

Great advice Josh! Titles and unpaid are 💩. One needs to stand out, to add one more tip, personal / pet open source projects really help 🤓

Hey Josh! And fellow software developers!
I hope you can add some perspective to my case here:

Right after college, I worked as an "associate software engineer" for the past 4 months, uncontracted. I was supposed to get a contract at the end of the third month "if things went well" but the company let me go because they felt like I was unreliable. Their reasoning was that I wasn't working at home and on weekends (after my 8:30-6 weekday shifts) to improve my skills, even though I was delivering all the tasks they were asking me to do in a timely manner.

I tried looking at other companies and they all had the same attitude "You can't expect work/life balance in the first 4-5 years of your career as a software developer".

I was wondering if that is true everywhere or if it is a particular case that I have to deal with because I live in a third world country with very loose labor laws and human rights.

Anyone got any input or personal experience with something like this?

Great video man. This is me since last few weeks. It didn't matter if there's a senior or a 5 year experience required in the job post. As long as I see ios, imma send my resume to them. In this part of the world, doing hybrid (react) is more prevalent, but I just know native. :( Into my week 3 and have already sent about 50. I haven't heard anything yet. I really hope i get a call soon..

I totally agree with you. I went for a internship and they paying very low for an intern. But then also i went their for interview because hr called me 10-20 times a day. And I was impressed by their persistence and eagerness to interview me. But it was a small startup and the employer was interested to hire some experienced guy for an internship, which itself was absurd. And I have to pay for all travel chargers for doing market research while traveling. And they will pay all gas charges after seeing the gas bill. So they said read few books on startup and come next week. How stupid this experience was for me, I never went their again.

Do 5 interview for different roles and level, finally get in as Intern Java Developers.
I hope this become good early step into real world developers.
Many things needs to learn tho~

Good advice. I tell people the same thing. I packed my resume full of technology keywords. React, Java, Spring, Angular, Babel, Webpack, Microservices, Docker etc etc. Any technology I know about I put on there that's how the recruiters find you.
