I think it's really annoying when people say that using a reference is "bad" or "not art" because I have to use references all the time, I have aphantasia and references are an absolute necessity for me

People who always draw hyper realistic glossy lips or fruit in their tan toned sketchbooks are crying over this title

As an artist, I feel like I have to draw realistic to get praise for my art because so many people don't consider more cartoon and anime style art to be genuine. I'm so glad someone is talking about this because while I can appreciate the effort and skill that goes into realism art, it gets boring. I'd rather watch people draw magical girls and dragons and things that come from their creativity instead of something I see everyday like eyes or lips. I'm not hating on realism, I just find other art styles to be much more interesting.

Realism is art. It's an artstyle that was most popular in mid 19th century, I think, and it is art and it is creative. What most people nowdays, especially on youtube, refer to as "realism" is in fact photorealism - realistic copying of a photo.

I will never forget what my teacher said in my university first year. He said that everyone can create what they see. It's important to create what doesn't exist. I was like, oke. I don't think that everyone can draw a human body without any effort. It's realy difficult to do realism art. And not everyone has that skill.

The thing about being able to improve at digital art by looking at others art is true and I can relate, I got a lot better at drawing by looking at other people's digital art, I did not copy them, I just looked at their art and saw how I could make mine better by practicing how they had drawn things then making my own little way of drawing it :]

Well, good thing opinions have nothing to do with fact. For those who argue that Realism is not really art, or creative, then I urge you to take time and learn Art History. Realism was the first modern art movement and revolutionized what constituted art. You and other artists can thank Realism for your current art. Also, if you want to become a better artist, studying art and artists is definitely beneficial. You can learning lighting by studying the masters, Caravaggio for example. Learning anatomy is also important and can make your art better, no matter the style. Reference is also important, artists use reference photos, it’s not tracing. No different than sitting in a class and drawing from a subject.

My unpopular opinion: Aging up minor characters is not a valid excuse for sexualising them. I'm sorry but why do you want a sexy aged up version of a child character? Why do you even want to see them that way when there are so many adult characters?

I think that most people can learn the technical skills related to art. Imagination and creativity are things that not everyone has.

I think lots of artist want to disregard or invalidate realism is because they can't do it. 🤷‍♀️

Like seriously it takes so much practice, time, effort and discipline to achieve one hyper realistic art work and not everyone is capable to reach that. So people just want them out, to feel better about their artworks because, those realistic artworks are mind blowing. comparing them to non realistic ones is a massacre, in terms of skill. But beauty, expression and perception over the art is a another story, being realistic does not guarantee that it's better than non realistic ones.

Like please, if you can't do it, don't attack those who can.

I don’t care that people call realism not real art. I love it and it shows SKILL and that you pay attention to references. Realism has got me so far, and made people more proud of me than when I would draw cartoon. You can say it’s not real art, but ANYTHING can be art, so yeah. Just had to share that bc people saying that really gets to me since I’ve spent my years practicing and trying to be good at realism and then it not be called real art??? Stupid.

I’d also say that realism is art... just not really ~creative art~. Obviously realism takes a CRAP TON of skill... but it’s kind of boring(to me). It’s replicating a picture. But it still applies art values like line, shading, shape, etc etc.

It makes me angry how some specific artists on instagram (not dropping names) who dont even try on their art (im talking messy extremely undetailed lineart and shading) can get like over 200K followers but a small artist who IS better than them will get NO POPULARITY AT ALL because everyone is fascinated by these AsThEtIc artstyles!!

Hm I guess my best friend who makes money from their ‘art’ isn’t an artist. Even though they spend hours everyday making ‘art’ it isn’t art.

To be able to draw what is right in-front of you can be learned, while creativity comes from true talent.

ive made my living creating reproductions of van gogh, (not forgeries) and im sick of people telling me its not art because "its not realistic" art is interpretive and subjective, so those people who claim realism is what art is all about dont even understand what they think they know

The one with straight people not being able to draw gay couples because they don’t know what it’s like is so weird because it’s like saying gay people can’t draw straight couples because they don’t know what it’s like lol

Oooohhh I hate doing lineart... it take 8 hours for me to line a simple portrait 😂😂.... and it's painful for me to do 😭

I believe that hyper realism requires the most skill, as you need to perfect your blending, lighting, anatomy and color selection. It is definitely just as much art as any other art style. And not just anyone can do it, there are very few who actually can, anyone can draw out of imagination of course that doesn't mean it will be good, just like anyone can draw what they see it just won't necessarily be good
