I don’t know if you need to hear this, but:

These lists are not intended to be used for making life changing decisions. They are just another look at the city. I present both good and bad points of view on this channel. I don’t just make videos that are negative. There are positive videos on the channel too, check them out. They are made from statistical sources made available by government agencies as well as first hand resident experiences. If you are happy living here, I am happy for you. No need to send me death threats or tell my how horrible I sound. Thanks.

Thank you to the following people who made the images of the city available under CC licensing. They in no way endorse or promote my videos in any way.

I live in Des Moines and I do not agree with you

Born and raised in Des Moines, but I've traveled all over the country. If I could live anywhere in the US, I would just stay home. I love it here.

The brutal winters part applies to almost all northern states, and it's not an Iowa thing.

As someone who lives in Des Moines and complains about it regularly- even I know this whole video is idiotic.

On an island? Really? You're 3 hours from Kansas City, 3 hours from Minneapolis, 5 hours from Chicago (which you could even travel via Amtrak) and 8 hours from Denver. Des Moines has great access to different midwest cities via car. And you also have an international airport. I feel more on an island living in Minneapolis than I did in Des Moines, since I’m so far north. Pretty weak argument.

“Living in Iowa means you’ll be miles away from any beaches or mountainous terrain.”

Right. Because it’s in the Midwest. This isn’t a shocker of one can look at a map. 🙄

I’m not a huge fan of living in DSM, but most of these are weird complaints 😂

I just moved to DSM. First I’m not sure if I will like it but after three months I love it. I really don’t care about sports cuz I never watch them anyways. It’s more peaceful, less stressful and people are nice. No taxes on groceries and lower taxes compared to the state I moved from. I can see myself live here for a long time. It’s nice in summer time cuz I don’t like too hot.

My fiancé and I met in Minneapolis. We moved to Des Moines couple years ago. She loves Des Moines head and shoulders above Minneapolis. Crime is much lower, traffic is a lot better, lower cost of living, “more beautiful” (her words). The only cons are less options for food, and lower pay…but if it’s a lower cost of living, does it matter? Rent is $400 less at our current place which has modern amenities compared to the radically out of date apt in Minneapolis.
Very interesting comparison.

Have you been to Cheyenne? That’s an island!

Gotta say, I moved to Des Moines from Wisconsin and the winters here are WAY better than in Wisco. Everybody from here warned me when I moved and they were wrong, these winters are way less bad than WI or Minnesota. Sports is dependent on what you like because there's a couple professional fighters out of des moines and there is a huge national muay thai tournament here.

10. If you've lived anywhere in the Great Plains or the Midwest, Des Moines will feel like the center of the action compared to some other cities. If you're from the East Coast, you might have trouble with the distance between cities, but being 2 hours from Omaha, 3 hours from Kansas City, 4 hours from the Twin Cities, and 5 hours from Chicago is a huge pro in my book.
8. Pretty fair point, however the college rivalry here is insane. The lack of sports isn't something the majority of people would complain about anyways.
6. This reason is probably here to scare people, something a lot of media is good at nowadays. Make good decisions and you'll be fine. I lived there for sixteen years and had no issues.
5. This is just not true. This is just perpetuating useless stereotypes. Des Moines is just like any other midwestern city, and outside of the state fair, the food you will find will be rather tame.
4. Tornadoes are not possible at any time realistically. The state of Iowa has had a total of three tornadoes in December ever, and the numbers are similar in January and February. March April and May are the only real times where severe weather is active.
3. This is actually a major con of living in Des Moines. However, making the best of it requires a little bit of time to master. The Des Moines River Valley north of the burbs is beautiful, and day trips can be made to the Driftless Area or Loess Hills. It's no Front Range, but it's refreshing, not to mention the amount of people compared to more popular natural features. Beaches is straight facts though. You'd be hard pressed to find anything remotely close to that in Iowa.
2. This really depends on who you ask. I enjoy it personally, it brings some excitement to town, but some people may not like it. It's something I will miss not living in Iowa anymore.

In summary, about half of these reasons are valid, but may depend on the person.

This video is totally bogus on so many levels. I grew up in NE Iowa and now live outside of Des Moines. Des Moines and Iowa is the friendliest place on earth. The Iowa tax rate has just Ben lowered to a 3.9 percent flat tax rate. The crime issue is nothing like it was presented in this video. And yes it is a huge agricultural state. It drives our economy and creates jobs for us. Sorry about the lack of mountains and oceans, but it is a great place to raise a family. People work hard in Des Moines and we are proud of that. Funny that this video didn’t mention that the Iowa State Fair is the most awesome fair on the

I wouldn’t mind moving out there from Ohio. It seems like the people are nicer and it’s a prettier state.

Des Moines folks might not realize that a fair amount of others from different cities might actually envy their relative remote isolation.

Des Moines has had exactly 0 tornadoes in like the pat 150 years.

Clicked on the video for a laugh as a life long Des Moines resident. Got more than a laugh. Not the greatest city, but not bad at all. All of these points are the epitome of ignorance. "You have to leave the city to get out of the city." No shit, lol.

I love Des Moines! From Kansas City which has come around leaps and bounds but I love the small feel ! I also like how you can get anywhere suburbs included in 20 minutes or less ! It's very walkable too !!
