A headphone pair from 2014, and it's still one of the best headphones on the market. I can absolutely recommend these, even today.

It’s 2024 and I have had my ath-m50x for 10 years. They are amazing, and when they eventually will need to be replaced, it will be with another pair.

Was gifted these for Christmas and so glad my family did their research. Because the cables were the primary concern since I'm usually pretty rough on my headphones and I'm glad you nailed that subject because cable ends are always first to go sour for me. Definitely a good purchase if you're low on cash but wanna splurge on what you find important being: Quality and durability, at an affordable price.

A very knowledgeable and well put together review video. I remember watching your review of the M50s awhile back well after I had bought my pair and enjoyed it thoroughly. This is one is no different. I'm diggin' the lock mechanism and removable cables with varied adapters. I was unaware Audio Technica had followed up with this until I saw your vid so thanks for the heads up.

Miss that intro music. Awesome how I was searching for some studio headphones and these came up. Def need to do a throw back video.

Just ordered them, I can't wait! I've been using doller store headphones or 10$ headphones the past few years, I'm so excited to hear good music again xD

re-watching this in 2022 with my ATH M50x on which I bought around the same time this came out. best buy of my life. they've traveled with me to almost every continent!

the band needs some new fabric and a video on how to replace that brought me back here. super stocked that they have lasted for so long.

Just bought a pair myself. Not my first pair of decent headphones so I was a little worried they would disappoint, but they totally blew me away. Best sounding headphones i have ever owned.

A great explanation of how these sound is that the EQ is set like a curvy W. Bass is curved up, mids are higher than most casual headphones, and treble is higher, balanced between the mid's peak and the bass. This makes bass nice and punchy, highs are clear and light, but the higher mids make it sound harsh at first compared to other bass-focused headphones, like a lot of cheaper earbuds or Beats headphones are. Once you get used to that, you're good to go and things sound really clear because of how much detail the mids add. Gaming sounds great due to the mids across the board, but I've found different music preferences can be iffy because mids are used so differently depending on genre. Lots of hiphop hardly use mids, so when it's there it just sounds muddy. Same thing with some rock and metal, though classical, acoustic, and jazz LOVE mids because the composition is written to use all three registers.

One major complaint that I never really noticed is how the soundstage (perceived width/broadness the audio) is thinner than most studio quality headphones in music, as I just don't have the training to hear that kind of thing. That said, it DOES make a noticeable difference in gaming. It's like using a directional soundbar for fake "surround sound" compared to genuine 360° 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound. It's still directional, and you can still tell where things are based on good sound design by the devs, so it's better than nothing – but when you prefer/ are used to genuine surround sound—or in this case, a wide soundstage—it does sound worse. Similar to how you love 60hz/60fps to begin with, but as soon as you get used to 144hz/120fps, 60/60 is really not enjoyable.
