Learn how to render architecture floor plans with 5 GOLDEN RULES for successful architecture floor plans. Rendering architecture floor plans either makes or breaks the drawing. An architecture floor plan isn’t complete until it has been rendered, either using Photoshop or similar software. In this video, you’ll learn 5 tips to render architecture floor plans.

Architecture Floor Plan Render tip #1: Hierarchy.
It’s common for students to render everything on their floor plans at the same line weight. This overclutters the floor plan and makes it difficult to read. The idea of being an architect is to draw clear and legible drawings that can easily be read by people who have no experience reading floor plans (such as clients!). Consider what you need to show, and perhaps don’t need to show in the floor plan render. For example, do you really need the trees to be the same hierarchy as the walls? There are 2 ways to alter hierarchy in your architectural floor plans. You have line weight and opacity. These can both be rendered in post-production using Photoshop. Doing so will make your architecture floor plans look so much better. Line weight: to simplify things, choose 3 different line weights. Thick, medium, and thin. Considering floor plans are to scale, the line thicknesses of walls, for example, should be to the correct dimensions. Therefore, walls that are structural and load bearing will be the thickest, interior walls won’t be nearly as thick as these walls in your rendered floor plan. Opacity is great to use to show how far away something is from the cut line. Everything being sliced through will be at full opacity. Everything below the floor plan’s cut line will have a lower opacity, depending on how far away they are from the plan’s cutline.
You don’t have to stick to these principles. To render my floor plans, I also lower the opacity of elements that aren’t super important and don’t need to have dominance in the drawing. The trees, furniture, labels and so forth can all have their opacity lowered.

Architecture Floor Plan Render tip #2: Colour Palette.
Again, this is about keeping it simple. When rendering architecture floor plans, choose 1-3 colours to use and keep them consistent. Again, this is about making your floor plan easy to read. You can go to Adobe Color and find complementary colours or sample other drawings you like. Pick the colours within Photoshop. Professional practices have colour templates. Usually, there are 1-3 colours they use consistently across all their drawings and projects, including their floor plan renders. A great idea is to create some colour swatches for yourself and use them for all your projects, then it’s one less thing you need to think about when rendering architectural drawings.

Architecture Floor Plan Render tip #3: Precedents.
Find precedents to inspire your own rendered architectural floor plans. Reference other floor plans by viewing them on Pinterest and find floor plans you like. You can copy their style and make it your own. The greatest artists have influences. You don’t need to make everything up yourself. Find what others are doing for their floor plan renders, find what you like about it and recreate it in your own floor plans.

Architecture Floor Plan Render tip #4: What is the floor plan trying to show?
Consider what the rendered floor plan is for. There are different types of floor plans as mentioned in the previous videos in this playlist. There are diagrammatic floor plans, sketch floor plans, developed floor plans and construction floor plans to name a few. Each type of floor plan has a different purpose. Consider what your plan is for and use that to guide what you’re doing. There’s no need to show construction detailing in a plan that is meant to show how the spaces work. There’s no need to show loose furniture in an architecture floor plan that’s meant to show construction detailing.

Architecture Floor Plan Render tip #5: Create a checklist.
Create a checklist for yourself to tick things off as you create your architecture floor plan render. As a time management tip, you can prioritise the important things first. Work down the list and tick things off as you complete them.
