2019 Mac Pro - How Apple Missed the Mark

The new Mac Pro is a beast, but there are more than a few glaring issues with this newly redesigned workstation.

At a starting price of $6,000, the 2019 Mac Pro is definitely not for the average consumer. It's packing industry-leading performance, but not at the base price.

Couple that with Apple's new Pro Display XDR for another $5,000.. not including the stand.

Let's talk about how Apple missed the mark with the new Mac Pro.

my local university - full sail - here in Tampa, FL is preordering a bunch of these. the university has a bunch of grads that go and work for pixar and other huge studios. I think that what his mac is aimed for. Studio professionals that will use hundreds /thousands of audio tracks (like wwdc showed) and complex video editing with animation and strenuous 3D work. this mac fulled maxed out will clear 50 grand easily.
Apple has met all markets.
imac 21.5 inch for basic
imac 5k for medium
imac pro for heavy/pro
mac pro for industry..
itll even be used as a server farm.
I dont think this computer was made for anyone other than what i just mentioned (hence, the price tag)
the reason the base mac pro is so expensive is simple, its user upgradable. no apple is going to be losing out on TONS of proprietary upgrades they usually would have got from other iterations of mac, so to counteract that, they boosted the base price.
great video none-the-less!

It's ridiculous to assert that "youtubers are professionals." Some people are and some people aren't. I bet there are youtubers who make a ton of money who don't know anything about frame rates.

And there are yputubers who shoot 8k footage on Reds. These people can also be novices.

The Mac Pro is basically for editing houses, recording studios, rendering studios, research institutions. These businesses don't bat an eye at $12, 000 per machine because they've got equipment that costs far more than that. They are interested in "can it get the job done?"

For instance, an 800mm canon EF lens- one of the white ones that still photographers use costs $13, 000. And you're bitching about a $10, 000 computer and a $6000 display. Leica makes a $2 million dollar lens by the way: Leica 1600mm f/5.6.

The new Mac Pro is for people whose livelihood depends on enterprise computers.

Cult of Mac has an article saying that the Mac Pro is a steal compared to the competition.

This system isn’t for the Tracy Morgans of the world- the “Gotta Getta Bugatti” people.

This is a professional machinr for people who need to crunch data.

As a professional photographer I have been using a photo editing mac since 1996. In recent years I have squeezed everything from my 5th Mac desktop (the last from 2010), and from my iMac, and from my Mac mini and from my two Macbook Pros. Purchased a Dell XPS laptop last year and two weeks ago built a Core i9 machine myself, thanks to you tubers like you. No MacPro needed for now !

Many consider themselves as "Pros" when, in true honesty, are just hobbyists, Prosumers. In Apples fault they have thrived in the booming creative market and now they decide to raise the bar so high, leaving a massive gap between their misleadingly called Pro audience. To be honest I guess they just thought, well, iMac Pros and even iMacs are enough powerful for the majority of content creators, we need something for the enterprises and corporations. This is a powerhouse workstation. If you consider yourself a Pro, what do you call the people working full time at Pixar, Disney, Hollywood studios? This is not a "Pro" Mac in the sense of the word Apple has been creating for so long. The term Pro is the issue here.

Clearly there are two types of pros. The freelancers / small productions and big companies or film studios which need the best possible solution. The new Mac Pro is the highest end. Us freelancers can still buy MacBook Pros, Mac minis, iMacs which will do the work more than well.

Arri Alexa is about $100k starting price. It is not for "pros" it is for the industry. If you're a pro get a iMac Pro, if you're in the industry get the Mac Pro. The industry will eat this thing up, especially with that screen!

I don't see how they missed the mark, instead they hit it bang on. Perhaps for you, it's not the product you dreamt of but a lot of people definitely got what they wanted with this. They've undoubtedly eroded some of the value, but I think the iMac pro was added as a replacement between the Mac mini and Mac Pro.

YouTubers aren't the professionals Apple targeted, you can edit your YouTube videos on a MacBook Air. haha

Well put! I completely agree! Seeing the writing on the wall, I went from the 5, 1 Mac Pro to a custom built Linux machine. I love it & wouldn't go back!

I just gave a thumbs up to offset the thumbs down. I just don't get why all the thumbs down for complete honest unbiased and real cost analytical information. That's why I come here. I am brand agnostic and try to keep it that way.

Sorry but no, a "full time YouTuber" isn't a professional. The Mac Pro is targeting the actual professionals who have felt neglected over the last several years. You're a prosumer; Apple has had plenty of options for prosumers in that time. YouTubers don't need 28-core computers with 128GB of graphics memory and 1.5TB of RAM. I'm calling BS that you can afford this, but we'll see once it's actually available. If it improves your workflow, you'll buy it. But my guess is you're puffing your chest to try to fend off criticism because you really can't afford it. But we can see through the facade. Not a good look on you.

If their target demographics are for professional studios such as Pixar, Disney and other big shot hollywood type corporation then I think the price justifies their needs considering they spent hundred millions $$$ for each movies. What I think people are upset of is that they have not released a modular consumer Mac with lower pricing point. It is also important to note that Mac Mini is affordable and can have eGPU and the Mac Mini itself is replaceable every few years.

My only question during the WWDC is what justifies $1000 price tag for the monitor stand 😏

This mac pro is only for corporations and small and large businesses who need this power no average home user or YouTube content creator need this much power.

I think you're pretty spot on here. I an a solo freelancer with an at-home graphic and web design studio, been a creative pro since 1980 B.C. (Before Computers) And the new Mac Pro is CLEARLY not for the likes of me. I'm not an Big Elite Ad Agency, Movie Studio, or Corporate Game Developer. I am still running a 2010 MP 5, 1 8-core. And I expect to try and upgrade this machine till I can't any more - or the inevitable software or OS upgrade turns it into a paperweight (RIP G5 Tower...). That machine in 2011 cost me about $4970 with 27-in LED Cinema Display. And If I want, I CAN put an NVIDIA card it it. When the time comes I'll probably looking at an almost utterly non-upgradeable iMac Pro - $5K out the door, and more like $7500 for a more useful configuration. But that 5K COMES with a display ... and I don't bee to buy a stand. But that 5K base configuration is still a more capable machine than the 6K Base MP....

The Mac Platform offers a number of advantages for Creatives, Mac OS's ease of use, integration, privacy and security and the build quality of the machines. But at current pricing, combined with increasing limitations and restrictions, that advantage is being eroded. There are, as you explain, LEGIONS of Professional Users who were waiting for a modular professional platform, and were bitterly disappointed in this elites-only machine. Apple will tell us that our market is served by the iMac Pro, MacBook Pro, IPad Pro and upper-configured iMacs. It a Brooklyn Salute to a vast swath of Professional users, and will do little to stem the abdication of pro users to Windows ( with all it;s problems) and LINUX. As a Graphic and Web Designer, one of the original Apple Evangelist markets, we resent having our needs being kicked to the curb

The cruel limitation of the sealed box iMac Pro, is that to get the most mileage out of the machine, users have to pre-buy the max-configuration they can possibly afford for whatever future capability they might need over the lifetime of the machine. When the time comes, I will have to carefully consider whether or not to go with an iMac Pro or leave the platform like so many of my colleagues.

Thanks for the great video Max. I agree with your assessment, but I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing. I would have loved to see a small refresh of the iMac Pro alongside of this release to speak to the creatives that you focus on in this video, but ultimately, I think they wanted to send a very specific and direct message to the elite professionals, who probably don't appreciate being categorized with indie filmmakers, youtubers, and small production studios. That's my thinking anyways. I don't feel disappointed because this particular release just wasn't for me as a wedding filmmaker. I love the thought and energy you put into this, thanks for all you do!

People on the internet are really pissed off by this machine. No, it’s neither for you and me, nor for this youtuber. It’s for enterprise grade productions, scientists, ai developers who need this kind of power. At that scale, price isn’t even taken into consideration. For hackinstosh people, you cannot build anything that comes close to it’s power (nobody is buying that base model, it exists only to market the most minmal price)

EDIT: After watching this video, this youtuber is really frustrated
